Rendezvous slows life's pace

Angie Henderson, of Prairie du Chien, tosses a cast iron skillet at a “man” (a manikin) in an effort to knock his hat off his head. She was one of many women, of all ages, who tried to stand her ground in the unconventional competition. (Photos by Correne Martin)

An expressive blacksmith at this year’s Rendezvous was hard at work fabricating an ornate fire poker, which he planned to donate to a benefit in Iowa.

Felted wares of numerous kinds were for sale at this gentleman’s camp at the Prairie du Chien Rendezvous Friday.

These U.S. riflemen were among a group of reenactors who gave a short skit during which they tried a rule breaker by a court martial. The “case” accusing a soldier of “derelict of duty and public drunkenness” entertained Rendezvousers Friday afternoon, June 18, on St. Feriole Island. Some even jumped in as jurors.

When the summer heat is blazing, a puddle from the prior evening’s rain makes for the perfect place to cool off. This youngster set his drink and toy down for a moment to take a little dip during Friday’s Rendezvous.

During a quiet moment Friday afternoon, at the 44th annual Prairie Villa Rendezvous, a lone flutist took shade under a tree and casually serenaded a small crowd gathered near the buffalo burger stand.

This gentleman was pretty animated and engaging with Rendezvousers passing by his tipi.

Walking sticks, katanas, furs, and jewelry were among the “period” pieces sold by Rendezvous vendors, both in the camp section and flea market area of the annual Prairie du Chien event.
