Plow blade cuts through windshield in crash with SUV

An SUV and plow truck collided in rural Glen Haven Christmas Eve, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department said. 

At about 9 a.m., the two-vehicle crash was reported to have happened at County V on Highway 133, in North Andover.

Observation of smashed SUV window results in drug-related arrests

A smashed rear vehicle window tipped off passing police officers who observed a parked SUV in the Country Inn and Suites parking lot Dec. 19, according to a report from the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At about 10 p.m., the officers noticed two occupants sitting inside the vehicle with the smashed window. They made contact with the occupants and observed the driver, Ryan Melvin, 29, of Readstown, exhibiting extreme signs of drug impairment. Melvin is currently on bond through Crawford County for previous methamphetamine charges. The passenger initially provided false identification to the officers but was identified as Kimberly Brown, 37, of Muscoda.

Prairie du Chien a five-star school on 2016-17 report card

Every year, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) releases report cards for each school and school district in the state, as part of the state accountability system. 

“Report cards are intended to help schools and districts use performance data to target improvement efforts to ensure students are ready for their next educational step, including the next grade level, graduation, college and careers,” the DPI stated.

Laci Meng and Job Nieland, of Monona, Iowa, are the parents of the 2018 New Year’s baby at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. Leah Elizabeth was born on Monday, Jan. 1, at 1:01 p.m., weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Leah is the hospital’s first Jan. 1 baby in many years, as the yearly VIP usually doesn’t arrive so quickly after the New Year. (Photos by Correne Martin)

The very first baby born in the New Year is a celebrity of sorts—in a small town anyway.

Crossing Rivers Health’s 2018 New Year’s baby is a cherished little darling girl, Leah Elizabeth, born to parents Laci Meng and Job Nieland, of Monona, Iowa, on Monday, Jan. 1, at 1:01 p.m. She arrived weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and measuring 20.5 inches in length.

Grandparents are Sherry and Dean Nieland, of McGregor; Robert Meng, of Bagley; Judy and Glen Sjoerdsma, of Randolph; and great-grandma is Birdie Meng, of Bagley. The baby is the first grandchild for either side of the family.
Though they were quiet while doting over their new daughter’s delicate features—including a warm complexion, a fair head of hair, chunky cheeks and wrinkly feet—both mom and dad agreed she’ll be spoiled.

Carp Fest

Carp King Bob Witt and Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Director Mike Ulrich proudly stand next to Lucky the Carp on New Year’s Eve following the 17th annual Droppin’ of the Carp at Lucky Park on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien. Ulrich said a great appreciation goes out to Parks and Recreation staff and volunteers at Hoffman Hall and to the Prairie du Chien Street Department staff. “We also greatly appreciate our sponsors: Prairie du Chien Tourism, Fuller Log and Lumber, Valley Fish and Cheese, Twisted Vision, Dan Gingerich, Design Homes, Leisure Time Sports Bowl and Banquet and the Prairie du Chien Eagles Club,” said Ulrich. Organizers include Carp Master Shawn Redman, Nate Gilberts, Tom Nelson and Mike Ulrich, along with Carp King Bob Witt. The Early Bird Droppin’ of the Carp Party at Hoffman Hall drew a good crowd of parents, grandparents and children who enjoyed a variety of activities including arts and crafts, carnival games, noisemakers and hats, a pet therapy dog, and meet and greet with the Carp King and Queen. Lucky the Carp Junior was available to be kissed for good luck throughout the coming year. At left, Tristan the Magician wowed his attentive audience.

The crowd gathers ‘round as Lucky the Carp is lowered into place at the stroke of midnight.

Smoked carp samples were enjoyed by many at the Early Bird Droppin’ of the Carp Party Sunday.

Woman charged with felony retail theft

A 29-year-old Viroqua woman was charged Dec. 15 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of felony retail theft and one count of possession of a controlled substance. 

Tiffany McKittrick faces up to three years and seven months in prison and fines of $10,500 if convicted of both counts. 

According to the criminal complaint, McKittrick, who is known to the loss prevention personnel at Wal-Mart of Prairie du Chien, was seen on surveillance cameras walking through Wal-Mart with a cart and placing merchandise into plastic shopping bags that were already in the cart.

Ferryville man charged with meth possession

A 46-year-old Ferryville man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine.

William Zehner II faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a Sheriff’s Department deputy was dispatched to a residence in the town of Freeman and that a man there had an active warrant from Grant County.

The deputy found Zehner II sleeping in an upstairs bedroom and it took him several minutes to wake Zehner II up, the complaint said.

Hoffman Hall receives $25,000 memorial donation

Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien was recently the recipient of a $25,000 donation from Bruce Welsch, an avid swimmer at the recreation center’s pool. The donation was contributed in honor of his parents, Chuck and Bernice Welsch.
In his tribute to them, Bruce wrote, in part:

“Thank you for your love, caring and guidance. Thank you for supporting me in high school, college and when joining the Armed Forces. Thank you for being great role models. Thank you for your endless sacrifices. You may be gone but will never be forgotten.”

Chuck and Bernice have been honored with a plaque on the “Leaders” donor wall at Hoffman Hall and the donation will be earmarked for Hoffman Hall Improvements.

W-S after-school activities offer education, fun and balanced meals

Thanks to two separate grants, Wauzeka-Steuben School is humming with after-school activity every Monday through Friday during the school term.

The Community Learning Center (CLC), in its fourth month of operation, is still growing and expanding. Assisted by a five-year grant from the Wisconsin Department of Education, staff members have enhanced their former Arts, Crafts, Technology program, tutoring and other programs to offer homework help, STEM, arts and crafts, physical fitness activities as well as volunteer opportunities after school Monday through Friday. In addition, the food service program has received a grant to serve a snack and an evening meal to students on school days.
