Two-vehicle accident in Freeman Township

On Tuesday, May 15, at 9:10 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident with no injuries or blockage at the intersection of Highway 35 and Highway 82 in Freeman Township.  

Wayne A. Hovden, 80, Ridgeway, Iowa, was stopped at the stop sign on Highway 82 waiting to make a left turn onto Highway 35 in a 2006 Buick sport utility vehicle. Albert J. Close, 67, Ferryville, was making a left turn onto Highway 82 from Highway 35 pulling a boat and trailer in a 2009 Chevy Silverado truck.  The Hovden vehicle pulled out, making the left turn and struck the side of the boat and trailer. 

Hovden and his passenger Patricia L. Hovden, 81, Ridgeway, Iowa, both claimed no injuries at the scene of the accident. Close also claimed no injuries at the scene.

People speak for and against Amundson at school board meeting

It was a standing room only crowd at the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night and extra chairs were brought in as numerous teachers, staff and students were on hand to show support for Aaron Amundson in anticipation of a possible vote about his position with the school district.

Rod and Gun Club building chimney swift towers at La Riviere

Two women cited for retail theft

On Thursday, May 10, at 7:04 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was called for a possible ongoing theft at Walmart, in the township of Bridgeport. It was reported that a white Nissan left the parking lot of Walmart and drove to Nathan Plaza and was possibly in possession of stolen property.

A Crawford County deputy made contact with the vehicle and its occupants. Sheena R. Slater, 26, Wauzeka and Trista Hernandez Cruz, 21, Wauzeka, both were found to be in possession of stolen property from Walmart. Items were identified by Walmart Asset Protection and returned to the store. 

Citations were issued to both for retail theft and both Slater and Hernandez Cruz were told they were not allowed back on Walmart property.

Fishing float owner believes the DNR is harassing him

A Harper’s Ferry, Iowa, small businessman believes he’s being harassed by the Wisconsin DNR and is speaking out after an April 26 encounter that resulted in his arrest for interfering with fishing. 

Bill Hubbard Jr., 53, of Harper’s Ferry, is the owner of Hubbard’s Fishing Float, located at Lock and Dam No. 9, on the Iowa side of the river, yet accessible near Gordon’s Bay boat landing on Wisconsin Highway 35. Hubbard has run the floating dock and café for 16 years, following in his father’s footsteps. For more than 70 years, the float business itself has provided a good place for anglers—both experienced and amateur—to enjoy fishing the Mississippi River.

Boscobel woman gets year in jail and 6 years probation for crashing into 7 people in tent

A 32-year-old Boscobel woman had her sentence withheld and was placed on probation for six years at her sentencing hearing on May 8 in Grant County Circuit Court for crashing into a tent and injuring seven people at a campground in Bagley on Aug. 12, 2017. As a condition of probation, Stacy M. Smith must serve one year in jail with work release privileges.

Smith must also pay restitution to the victims in an amount yet to be determined. Judge Craig Day said he believes the restitution amount will be substantial. Smith still owes the court $2,641.10 of $7,416.10 in court assessments.

There was a standing room only crowd in the Crawford County Courtroom Wednesday afternoon, the vast majority of whom were teachers, administrators and students from the Prairie du Chien School District who were there in a big show of support for Bluff View Principal Aaron Amundson.

High-speed chase ends in crash

On Tuesday, May 8, at 12:54 p.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department of a vehicle pursuit coming into Crawford County. Grant County advised the suspect was driving a white minivan with the Wisconsin Dells Duck logo on the side of the vehicle. Grant County advised that the vehicle was stolen and that they had received numerous complaints reference the vehicle driving erratically. Grant also said that the vehicle was westbound on Highway 60. Grant County ended their pursuit at that time. The Wauzeka-Steuben School was contacted and notified not to have children outside.

Girl Scout camp builds brave, outdoorsy, outgoing youth

Prairie du Chien’s Katelyn Mathies, 8, will attend the Mess Makers session at Camp Ehawee in Mindoro this summer. She’s most excited about sliding in paint on the slip-n-slide and meeting up with the friends she made last year.

Katelyn was all smiles, but still had a hard time saying goodbye to camp last summer when her parents picked her up.

Everyone knows children love to camp. And in 2018, area Girl Scouts will be going on full-blown adventures. 

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland unveiled its summer camp season, featuring double the programming, expanded overnight options and themed day camps. One Prairie du Chien family will send two daughters on a return trip to Camp Ehawee, Badgerland’s primary resident camp for its K-5th grade Girl Scouts in Mindoro, in La Crosse County. The camps begin the week of June 17 and run through Aug. 5 and are held among thick pine trees within a camping area that includes a bunkhouse, cabins, platform tents, campfires, a pool, flush toilets and more.

Passed out man busted for meth possession

On May 8, the Crawford County K-9 Unit was on patrol in Wauzeka Township along Highway 60 when the deputy observed a 1996 Chevrolet S10 parked in the Indian Mound Park Wayside. 

A lone man was observed sitting in the driver’s seat slumped over. The deputy awoke the man, identified as Ryan Leffler, 53, Wauzeka. Leffler was confused on what day it was and where he had come from. A lieutenant arrived on scene and they discovered Leffler had been passed out for approximately 5 hours. Leffler displayed signs of impairment and was found to have a bottle of urine hidden in his crotch area.
