School accompanist expresses 25 years of service through song

I should’ve asked her to play a melody. But I didn’t need to. The gleam in her eyes was grand enough to resonate the sweetest, most lyrical song. 

Playing piano is like speaking a language for Lori Frailey. 

“It expresses more than words can say,” she said.

Since 1995, Lori has been an accompanist for middle school and high school music students at Prairie du Chien. Her notes enhance kids’ musical experiences while also giving her a perfectly-matched creative outlet.

Three candidates for two seats on PdC School Board

There are three candidates running for two seats on the Prairie du Chien School Board in the spring election on April 2. The three seats are all for three-year terms. The top two vote getters will be elected.

The candidates are incumbent Lynn O’Kane, incumbent Cassie Hubanks and former school board member Duane Rogers.

Local man falls asleep at the wheel, totals vehicle

A Prairie du Chien man fell asleep at the wheel before crashing his vehicle in Beetown last week, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. 

On March 22, at about 12:15 p.m., William Seeley, 22, was driving his 2004 Mercury in Beetown Township on County U, when he fell asleep and drove the vehicle off the right side of the road. Seeley struck a guardrail on a bridge and the vehicle went into the culvert. He was transported by West Grant EMS to an area hospital for non life-threatening injuries. 

Seeley’s vehicle was totaled and the bridge sustained major damage, the sheriff’s department reported. William was cited for inattentive driving.

Gallagher bringing world-famous comedy to Prairie du Chien

Gallagher, the world-famous comedian and prop comic known for smashing watermelons as part of his act, will perform in Prairie du Chien April 6.

Gallagher uses his Sledge-O-Matic to smash watermelon and other foods to smithereens during his shows. Be prepared to take cover.

World-famous comedian Gallagher became a household name by smashing watermelons during his highly-rated HBO TV specials. His signature sketch is a pitch for the “Sledge-O-Matic,” a large wooden mallet that he uses to smash a variety of food items and other objects, culminating with a watermelon. 

Gallagher is coming to share his hilarious antics and insights and his incredibly creative word play in Prairie du Chien on Saturday, April 6. One 8 p.m. performance is scheduled at the Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center on the grounds of the Prairie du Chien High School. 

Advanced tickets are recommended and can be purchased at paac.ludus.com or by calling the high school at 326-3700, ext. 3312. Tickets in varying levels of the “splash zone” are available.

River Ridge Board set to approve borrowing for exterior site project

The River Ridge School Board voted 6-0 at a special meeting Wednesday night to authorize possible borrowing for the $2.2 million exterior site and athletic fields project for the Patch Grove school.

Trumpeter swans near Prairie du Chien

These are six of the eight trumpeter swans that were in a cornfield along Stuckey Road near Prairie du Chien Tuesday afternoon. Trumpeter swans can be seen in Wisconsin during the spring and fall migrations. They mate for life and part of the courtship ritual is when the males and females spread their wings simultaneously. The trumpeter swan is the heaviest living bird native to North America. It is also the largest extant species of waterfowl with a wingspan that may exceed 10 feet. By 1933, fewer than 70 wild trumpeters were known to exist, and extinction seemed imminent, until aerial surveys discovered a Pacific population of several thousand trumpeters around Alaska’s Copper River. Careful reintroductions by wildlife agencies and the Trumpeter Swan Society gradually restored the North American wild population to over 46,000 birds by 2010. Adults usually measure 4 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 5 inches long, though large males can exceed 5 feet 11 inches in total length. The weight of adult birds is typically 15–30 pounds. It is one of the heaviest living birds or animals capable of flight. The largest known male trumpeter attained a length of 6 feet, a wingspan of 10 feet 2 inches and a weight of 38 pounds. Healthy Roots of Crawford County promoting wellness in the workplace

The Crawford County Board of Supervisors ‘Took the Pledge’ at their February meeting. The board also passed a resolution making a commitment to the health and well-being of county employees.

Hitting gas instead of brake causes chain reaction crash

On Monday, March 18, at 7:57 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a multi-vehicle accident on Water Street in Seneca, with no blockage and no injuries.

Lucija F. Nickels, 64, Eastman, was pulling over on Water Street in Seneca to park behind three other vehicles.  The Nickels’ vehicle accelerated instead of stopping, rear-ending a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado owned by Brandon A. Grimsled, 37, Boscobel. This caused the Grimsled vehicle to rear-end a 2005 Chrysler van owned by Nathan A. Mormann, 39, Gays Mills, which caused the Mormann vehicle to rear-end a 2013 Jeep owned by Lisa J. Cornwell, 40, Seneca.

Make way for Casey’s

The former Shelly’s Diner at 525 S. Marquette Rd., in Prairie du Chien, came down Tuesday. Ralston Construction, of Palo, Iowa, has been contracted by Casey’s General Store to tear down the old facility to make way for a new Casey’s, according to one of the site workers. He said their goal was to have most of the structure down that day, though additional deconstruction might happen today (Wednesday) because sorting through the materials for recycling would be time consuming. Remodeling project starts at ALDI, store to close for month

The Prairie du Chien ALDI store is currently under remodel but it remains open to shoppers. Work along the exterior began in late February. Plans are for the store to close for renovations in late May and reopen too customers toward the end of June, according to ALDI Oak Creek Division Vice President Atty McGrath. 

“We can’t wait to bring the new look of ALDI to our Prairie du Chien shoppers,” McGrath said. 

Once remodeled, the new Prairie du Chien ALDI store layout will provide an improved in-store experience and feature additional refrigeration space to accommodate even more fresh, healthy and convenient products. More retail space will allow the grocery store  to carry more of the items included in its fresh product expansion, where 20 percent of products in every ALDI store will be new compared to last year.
