Iowa man charged with fifth OWI

A 35-year-old Dorchester, Iowa man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating while intoxicated (fifth offense), one count of failure to install an ignition interlock device, and one count of operating while revoked.

Nicholas Mahr faces up to  11.5 years of imprisonment and fines of $28,100 if convicted of all counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a vehicle hit a truck which was parked in a parking lot in downtown Prairie du Chien. The driver of the vehicle then asked someone for directions to Bob’s Bar and left the scene.

Bagley man charged with meth possession

A 41-year-old Bagley man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of meth (repeater), and one count of operating with a restricted controlled substance in his blood (fourth offense).

Jason Udelhofen faces up to $20,000 in fines and 9.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a Crawford County Sheriff’s Department deputy made a traffic stop in the village of Ferryville. The traffic stop led to a search, and the deputy found a plastic baggie containing large crystalline chunks, which later was identified as meth.

Udelhofen said he had just purchased the baggie of meth in La Crosse for $120 and had taken a “hit” of meth while he was in La Crosse earlier, the complaint said.

Prairie men charged with meth possession

A 48-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine as a party to a crime, and one count of possession of marijuana as a party to a crime (repeater).

Patrick Tesar Sr. faces up to $11,000 in fines and four years of imprisonment if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, Patrick Tesar Sr. and Patrick Tesar Jr. both resided in the same motel room. Officers knew that Tesar Jr. was on probation for a drug offense and was in possession of a device that would provide a sample of urine other than his own.

Woman swept away by river

A 74-year-old De Soto woman wandered away from her home and was swept away by the rising Mississippi River. Her body was found a short time later.

Mary Heath’s home is in a flooded area along the river. Heath was reported missing at about 6:55 a.m. Saturday from her residence on a road near Blackhawk Park which had been closed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Department said it was reported that an elderly woman may have wandered away from her residence during the night.

Law enforcement could only get to the residence by boat, so the Wheatland and De Soto fire departments launched their boats from a boat landing to get to the residence.

Bridge at Lansing closing for a week

The Iowa 9/Black Hawk Bridge at Lansing will be closed for about one week beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, April 15, for a project to remove and replace several structural steel pieces, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office. 

Message signs will be in place along state highway routes in both Iowa and Wisconsin to alert motorists of the pending road and bridge closure.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Registry to save critical time should your loved one wander

The Prairie du Chien Police Department recognizes the importance of time in tracking a wandering and vulnerable loved one. So, in an effort to efficiently serve and protect the citizens of Prairie du Chien, a new, voluntary registry is being offered through which family members can register loved ones who are residents of Prairie du Chien and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.

Alice in Dairyland finalists include another woman from Crawford County

Five women have been named finalists in the 72nd annual Alice in Dairyland competition, including Sarah Achenbach, of Eastman (front, left). Although she’s traveled thousands and thousands of miles in the past 10 months, Kaitlyn Riley can’t believe her reign as Alice in Dairyland is winding down.

“It feels as though I just started,” said Riley, who hails from a small Jersey dairy farm in Mt. Zion, Crawford County. “But for me, it’s been the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Riley introduced the five top candidates who are seeking to fill her shoes in becoming the state’s 72nd official agricultural ambassador—Alice in Dairyland—including Sarah Achenbach, of Eastman. The other four finalists are Cassandra Krull, Lake Mills; Abigail Martin, Milton; Mariah Martin, Brooklyn; and Tess Zettle, Juda.

Not one, but two Menards coming to town

Two Menards stores are slated to open in Prairie du Chien sometime in late summer of 2020. The stores will be constructed, starting in the spring next year—one in each business park on either side of the city.

Man arrested for bail jumping, woman apprehended for meth

On March 21, at 8 p.m., a deputy of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office made contact with Jesse M. Nash, 32, Soldiers Grove, on Latham Road near the intersection of Davig Ridge in the township of Utica. The deputy observed Nash, whose driver’s license is suspended, operating a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. Nash is on bond through Crawford County for a pending drug-related charge.

Local man arrested for meth

On March 23, at 2 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu in the township of Freeman. The deputy identified the driver as Kyle Vanderbilt, 32, Prairie du Chien. A 24-year-old Prairie du Chien man was a passenger in the vehicle.

Vanderbilt, who is on active parole for possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine precursors, had an active felony warrant for his arrest through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He was displaying signs of drug impairment. K-9 Breck was utilized for an open air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of one or more controlled substances.
