Have you noticed any warning signs of dementia? Consider a brain check

There are approximately 500 individuals living in Crawford County with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, according to the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eagle Country.

That number is on the low end of estimation, and it is expected to triple in the next 20-30 years, shared Gina Laack, ADRC dementia care specialist, who provided free brain checks to about half a dozen people at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library Tuesday. 

Those who stopped by the scheduled event sat with Laack one-on-one for the confidential 10-15 minute session, which involved a series of three short tests to determine if there were possible memory impairments or not.

Man arrested for meth related offenses

On April 1, at 4 a.m., a Crawford County deputy came across a vehicle stopped partially in the lane of traffic near the intersection of County Road E and Highway 60. The deputy observed that the 2004 Chevrolet Blazer had its hazard lights on, and that there was a man walking near the vehicle. The deputy identified the man as Derek McDiarmid, 25, Blue River. 

Upon making contact with McDiarmid, the deputy observed extremely prominent indicators of narcotics impairment. McDiarmid is on bond through Richland, Grant and Sauk counties for methamphetamine related charges. Furthermore, it was discovered that McDiarmid did not have a valid driver’s license.

‘12 Angry Jurors’ a dramatic, actor-driven show for PdC Drama Hawks

The Prairie du Chien Drama Hawks spring play, “12 Angry Jurors,” is anticipated to be a serious, actor-driven and theatrical production challenging the moxie of the student actors substantially. It will give local audiences a chance to see the caliber of talent the high school drama department is turning out. 

Scheduled April 12 and 13, in the new performing arts center theater, with performances at 7 p.m. both nights and a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday only, “12 Angry Jurors” is a gritty courtroom drama with a 1950s feel in all aspects, from the costuming to the way the actors speak their lines.

Birrenbach gives $25,000 memorial to Ft. Crawford

The most considerable personal donation ever given to the Prairie du Chien Historical Society, for the amount of $25,000, was made Monday, April 1, by Ken Birrenbach, in honor of his late wife. This tremendous contribution is being used to establish the Dorothy Birrenbach Friends of the Fort Crawford Museum Fund. 

“The Fort Crawford Museum was one of Dorothy’s favorite charities. For many years, she contributed her time by working in the museum gift shop. She especially enjoyed the Cannons at the Fort because she loved the children,” stated Ken. “I’m making this donation as an endowment so that, even though she’s no longer with us, she continues to give to the museum.”

Hubanks, O’Kane retain Prairie du Chien School Board seats

Incumbents Cassie Hubanks and Lynn O’Kane have kept their seats on the Prairie du Chien School Board following the spring election on April 2.

Hubanks had 700 total votes. O’Kane garnered 645 and challenger and former board member Duane Rogers got 569.

The top two vote getters each won three-year terms for the two available seats on the school board.

The Mississippi River at McGregor was at 20.3 feet at 6:45 a.m. on April 1 and is expected to reach 21.9 feet by April 5, according to the National Weather Service.

Iowa man charged with fifth OWI

A 35-year-old Dorchester, Iowa man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating while intoxicated (fifth offense), one count of failure to install an ignition interlock device, and one count of operating while revoked.

Nicholas Mahr faces up to  11.5 years of imprisonment and fines of $28,100 if convicted of all counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a vehicle hit a truck which was parked in a parking lot in downtown Prairie du Chien. The driver of the vehicle then asked someone for directions to Bob’s Bar and left the scene.

Bagley man charged with meth possession

A 41-year-old Bagley man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of meth (repeater), and one count of operating with a restricted controlled substance in his blood (fourth offense).

Jason Udelhofen faces up to $20,000 in fines and 9.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a Crawford County Sheriff’s Department deputy made a traffic stop in the village of Ferryville. The traffic stop led to a search, and the deputy found a plastic baggie containing large crystalline chunks, which later was identified as meth.

Udelhofen said he had just purchased the baggie of meth in La Crosse for $120 and had taken a “hit” of meth while he was in La Crosse earlier, the complaint said.

A 48-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine as a party to a crime, and one count of possession of marijuana as a party to a crime (repeater).

Patrick Tesar Sr. faces up to $11,000 in fines and four years of imprisonment if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, Patrick Tesar Sr. and Patrick Tesar Jr. both resided in the same motel room. Officers knew that Tesar Jr. was on probation for a drug offense and was in possession of a device that would provide a sample of urine other than his own.
