Anhydrous leak reported in Marietta Township

An anhydrous ammonia leak in Marietta Township Saturday evening was contained in less than an hour.

On Saturday, May 11, after 8:15 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department reported that U.S. Highway 61 was closed, from Marietta Valley Road to the Boscobel bridge, due to an anhydrous ammonia leak near North Irish Ridge Road.

The reporting party, who called 911, said the ammonia was blowing across the highway and there was an odor. The tanks were both 1,000 gallons, located on a trailer, in a field to the west of the highway. The tanks each had about 800 gallons of anhydrous ammonia in them.

There was no need for evacuation; however, emergency personnel immediately shut down the area to traffic. Residents were urged to shelter in place, close all vents and windows and shut off heating and air conditioning units.

As sweet as mom herself

By Correne Martin

What better way to say “I love you, mom,” than with a sweet treat.

Families across the country celebrated Mother’s Day Sunday in both commercialized and homemade fashions.

Café Hope in Prairie du Chien was just one local business that participated in creating the quick and simple kind of gifts for many to present their mothers on their big day. Decorators Connie Christoph and Leah Strong worked meticulously in the Sharing Spaces Kitchen in the days leading up to Mother’s Day, preparing beautiful edible flower-covered cupcakes for the café. The colors and floral varieties were enticing.

A Bluff View seventh grader was one of eight national finalists from over 1,000 student entrants in a Black History Rap Contest.

Kate Olson, the daughter of Matthew and Jennifer Olson, of Prairie du Chien, wrote an original rap song about Edna Lewis, a pioneering African American chef and teacher, as part of Mrs. Michelle Kirchman’s language arts class. The 12-year-old’s confident bluster and running rhymes were a sure standout for the contest.

The rap was required to start out as a poem written about a lesser-known African American historical icon, have at least 16 lines and include a hook—or a musical phrase used to catch the listener’s ear.
