Drowning case appeal dismissed

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals has essentially agreed with the Crawford County court system in the determination of a wrongful death lawsuit driven by the parents of the 4-year-old boy who drowned in the Prairie du Chien outdoor pool in 2017.

The state court recently upheld county judge Craig Day’s ruling to dismiss the lawsuit.

Kurt Warrington Jr. and Rachael Warrington filed the case after their son Kashton died several days after being found unresponsive during a swimming lesson Aug. 2, 2017, at the Wacouta Aquatic Park. The Warringtons alleged the boy’s death occurred because city and Prairie du Chien School District personnel “were negligent in their supervision and custody” of him.

Prairie du Chien School District’s motion in civil suit denied

A motion for a summary judgement in a lawsuit brought against the Prairie du Chien School District by the family of a Prairie du Chien boy has been dismissed.

Dennis and Talmadge Knight are suing the district and its employees for negligence, claiming that a principal caused a chemical burn on Talmadge’s hand while he was in middle school.

Earlier this year, the school district filed a motion for a summary judgement, but La Crosse County Circuit Court Judge Todd Bjerke has denied the motion.

A jury acquitted Aaron Amundson during a trial in August of 2018 in Crawford County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit demands $50,000 in compensation for damages sustained by Talmadge.

On Nov. 10, at 12:50 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit saw a 2002 Jeep operating on Church Street in the village of Soldiers Grove. The Jeep was swerving within its lane and traveling at a slow rate of speed. The operator of the Jeep, upon seeing the deputy, drove onto Bugle Street, left the vehicle parked in the roadway and attempted to hide near a residence. The deputy contacted the driver, identified as Travis Johnson, 31, Gays Mills, who had his pants undone due to attempting to conceal contraband. Johnson exhibited indicators of drug impairment and is on active parole through the state of Wisconsin for delivery of methamphetamine.

Dems, GOP jointly sponsor speaker on foreign government influence

By Correne Martin

The Republican and Democratic parties of Crawford County are coming together to sponsor a speaker on the techniques and actors foreign governments employ to influence democratic institutions. Dave Schroeder, strategist and senior cyber subject matter expert at UW-Madison, will talk and lead a free and public discussion on this topic at the Prairie du Chien High School Little Theater on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.

“Two major political parties jointly sponsoring something is almost unheard of. It’s something that’s missing in politics, but this issue is one that should concern everyone,” said Democratic Party Chair Dale Klemme. “We encourage all to come to this non-partisan event.”

A Quilt of Valor is a handmade covering of red, white and blue fabric layers and padding stitched together with kindness and gratitude. It is presented to a veteran or military service member touched by war, free of charge, as a token of thanks from the community in hopes of providing comfort, peace and healing. Some are presented in public ceremonies, while others have been given in private. To request one for yourself or a loved one, one must simply ask.

Across southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa, especially in the past five years, quilting groups have enjoyed selecting the perfect patriotic patterns and piecing them together for quilt creations that each have a one-of-a-kind design. Just as every veteran has a unique story of their own experiences, the Quilts of Valor awarded are also distinctive and meaningful.

Trailer up in flames

The Mt. Hope Fire Department fought a trailer fire in the village Thursday morning, Nov. 7. According to department officials, the owner had just purchased the trailer and moved his belongings inside but was not actually living there yet. No one was injured and the cause is still unknown. UPDATE Wednesday, Nov. 13, 10:20 a.m.: A trailer house in Mt. Hope is a total loss following a fire last Thursday, Nov. 7.

“We think it was a combination of furnace troubles and an older trailer,” Mt. Hope Fire Chief Rick French shared. “It’s unclear if it was the wiring or furnace that exactly started it. We saw nothing suspicious. The renter reported that he could smell smoke and he opened the door and [the fire] got the oxygen it needed and the trailer became fully engulfed in flames.”

French noted, it took about two and a half hours to get the fire completely extinguished and their work finished.

Patch Grove and Fennimore assisted at the scene.

Currently, donations are being accepted for the owner, who lost all his possessions in the fire, at Reliable Auto Detailing, in Prairie du Chien.
