Stars and Stripes fun & fireworks July 3

Guttenberg invites everyone to celebrate the nation's birthday at its popular annual Stars and Stripes celebration to be held Saturday, July 3. A fun day of family activities has been planned by the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce. This year's theme is "Bold Stripes, Bright Stars, Brave Hearts."

The weekend will kick off on Friday evening, July 2, at the weekly River of Music concert in Ingleside Park, featuring music by "Triple Threat" from 6-9 p.m.

A celebration of life service/gathering will be held on Sunday, June 27, at Clayton County Fairgrounds at National from 2-5 p.m.

Raymond Paul Wille, 85, of Guttenberg, died Monday, June 14, 2021, at home surrounded by his family.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 16, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church. 

Funeral services were Thursday, June 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. John Moser.

Rick Kuhlman, 74, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Graveside services were Tuesday, June 22, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Colesburg. A reception followed at the Lone Pine Country Club in Colesburg.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Paul Dale “PD” Dickson, 86, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.

Funeral services were Friday, June 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman. Visitation was before services at the church.

Inurnment was at St. John’s Cemetery, Guttenberg.

In October 1988, philanthropists Irene and Oakland Becker bequeathed two parcels of land, Becker east and west in Millville Township to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF). A Life Estate on this property was arranged with INHF and reads: “Said property to be used for demonstration of conservation practices, enhancement of wildlife habitat and public recreational use and benefit, after the termination of the life estates.”

Growing up in Guttenberg evokes fond memories

Local historian and nonagenarian Adele Parker has lived in Guttenberg along the shores of the Mississippi River most of her life. She  was born to parents John and Frances Mahowald. The 96-year-old was raised in a humble household with sisters Jane and Zella Ruth "Peppy." Adele shared the story behind her sister's familiar nickname. "My sister, Zella Ruth, was sitting at the table at my uncle's farm. She was always wiggling around and he said, 'Your name should be Peppy,' and it was ever since," explained Adele.

City council hires new police chief

Derek Chambers, an officer with the Guttenberg Police Department for 13 years, was hired as police chief when the city council approved his appointment at its regular monthly meeting on June 15.  He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of long-time Police Chief George Morteo, who will leave the position in late July after nearly 30 years with the local department.

William “Bill” Richard Leliefeld, 81, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, June 10, 2021, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Michael Mescher. Visitation was before services at the church.

Lana J. Gratace, 74, of Prairie du Chien, Wis. passed away surrounded by her loving daughters, Thursday, June 10, 2021, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Visitation was Sunday, June 13, at Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien.

Funeral services were Monday, June 14, at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Prairie du Chien, conducted by Rev. James Weighner.
