City council acts on cell tower request

Mayor Bill Frommelt led the Guttenberg city council through a 30-item agenda at the regular monthly council meeting on Aug. 9. On hand for the meeting were council members Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker, City Manager Denise Schneider and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Roger Zach

 was born to Wesley and Emma (Zobeck) Zach on Feb. 3, 1938, in Cedar Rapids and walked off the stage for the final time on Aug. 2, 2021. He signed off on his well-lived life with a smile on his face and laughter in his belly. The doctors and nurses didn’t know that they were in for the final show that included lots of entertainment, comedy, and one-liners until his departure. Roger was proud to say he got to live a good life doing what he loved.

Duwe field & playground nears completion


The new playground equipment at the Darwin Duwe Ball Field & Playground is ADA compliant and includes climbing equipment, slides and three handicap accessible, ground-level activity panels. The late Darwin Duwe (1959-1982) of Guttenberg was an avid baseball player and fan. He was a member of the Guttenberg Jaycees and dedicated his time to Little League. Darwin was employed with Mid America Transportation Corp. as a deckhand on the Ann King when he slipped off the barge and drowned in January 1982. He was 22 years old.

Filing opens for city, school board seats

Iowa school board and municipal elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2. Local voters will go to the polls to fill vacancies on the Clayton Ridge school board and Guttenberg city council. The first day to file nomination papers  is Aug. 23.

Kylie J. Duster

Kylie Jo Duster, 20, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021, in Dubuque.

Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Dubuque. Funeral services followed the visitation at the funeral home.

Kylie was born Aug. 21, 2000, in Dubuque, the daughter of Kevin Duster and Alissa Allen.

Gwen Carole Eilers

Gwen Carole Eilers, 79, of Luana died Friday, July 23, 2021, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon.

Memorial visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 8, from 3-5 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mt. Olivet, Guttenberg.
