City council mulls scope of CV director position

David Allen Eglseder, 75, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Dr. Chris F. Hugo

Dr. Chris F. Hugo, 76, of Guttenberg passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022.

Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 27, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and before services at the church. 

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman.

Outdoor adventurer enjoys last frontier

Clifford Judkins, who recently moved to Guttenberg, was born in 1937. He grew up in California and joined the Air Force in 1954. Judkins attended aircraft and engine school in Illinois during his enlistment. 

"I became a jet engine mechanic and was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in California," said Judkins. "It was about 40 miles from where my grandfather's homestead was. My dad was raised there and the family had a cabin there. It made it nice to be so close."

Guttenberg was finalist Healthy Hometown contest

Guttenberg was one of eight finalists in the Community Award category in the 2022 Healthy HometownSM  Powered by Wellmark contest, as announced by the Healthiest State Initiative. 

A congratulatory letter was recently received by the City of Guttenberg from Laura Jackson, Chief Health Officer of Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Kathleen “Carole” Wahls, 96, of Garnavillo went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 19, 2022.

Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, and before services on Wednesday.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Gospel Hall, Garnavillo.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

John Francis Althoff, 73, of Luxemburg passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, at Manor Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville and will continue Monday from 8:45-9:45 a.m. at the funeral home prior to mass.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate.

Don’s wish was to be cremated with his final resting place next to his lifelong friend and wife.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1943, in Colesburg to Frank and Elma Lee.

To a wood carver each block of wood contains an endless number of possibilities. It is up to the artist to discover which one of these prospects will emerge. Setting an artistic vision free from a block of wood is liberating, and the creative force can have you hooked for life. 

"Whittling is just knife work. Wood carving involves a wider assortment of tools to create a desired outcome," says Ron Kaiser of rural Clayton County.
