Clayton Ridge coach retires after 22 years

Each coach has a different approach to managing a sports team. Tom Krall of Guttenberg has been perfecting his skills as a team leader since he was 15 years old. Krall recently stepped down from his 22-year coaching career with the Clayton Ridge School District. "My coaching career began the year Garnavillo and Guttenberg merged into one school district," Krall commented.

Community vitality is work session topic

The Guttenberg city council held a work session on March 30 to discuss the community vitality position that has been vacant since the resignation of Emily Yaddof late last year. The Community Vitality advisory committee subsequently interviewed candidates and made a recommendation to the city council in February, but the council took no action at that time, instead making plans to continue discussion on the scope of the position.

Clark “Ken” Strader Jr., 78, of Guttenberg passed away at the UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be Friday, April 8, from 9-11 a.m. at St. John’s Church, Guttenberg. Funeral will follow at 11 a.m.

Charlotte Jane Reimer passed at home surrounded in love among her family on Saturday, March 19, 2022.

Visitation and funeral services were Saturday, March 26, at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.

Burial was in the Garnavillo City Cemetery.

Richard Berdette Hyde, 86, of Elkader, passed away at home on Monday, March 7, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Elkader, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the church. There will also be a Masonic Service held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Masonic Temple, Elkader.

Blooming Branches, located at 511 South First Street in Guttenberg, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. A variety of specialty food and drinks items will available that day as well as in-store specials and a free gift for each valued customer. "Stop in, have a drink and a bite to eat and see our new spring line of products," said Linda Ludovissy and Nancy Schroeder Blooming Branches co-owners.

Mississippi flood outlook predicts near normal risk

With melting snow and the arrival of spring, Guttenberg residents have learned to keep an eye on river levels as the traditional spring crest on the Mississippi River approaches.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts the risk of Mississippi River spring flooding at near-normal for the Guttenberg area.

Mary Lou Harbaugh, 73, of Guttenberg, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, after a brave journey with cancer. 

Visitation was Monday, March 21, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman.

LaVonne Theresa Brimeyer, 79, of Holy Cross, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, surrounded by her five children.

Visitation was Monday, March 21, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Buena Vista, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.
