Richard Berdette Hyde, 86, of Elkader, passed away at home on Monday, March 7, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Elkader, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the church. There will also be a Masonic Service held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Masonic Temple, Elkader.

Blooming Branches, located at 511 South First Street in Guttenberg, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. A variety of specialty food and drinks items will available that day as well as in-store specials and a free gift for each valued customer. "Stop in, have a drink and a bite to eat and see our new spring line of products," said Linda Ludovissy and Nancy Schroeder Blooming Branches co-owners.

Mississippi flood outlook predicts near normal risk

With melting snow and the arrival of spring, Guttenberg residents have learned to keep an eye on river levels as the traditional spring crest on the Mississippi River approaches.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts the risk of Mississippi River spring flooding at near-normal for the Guttenberg area.

Mary Lou Harbaugh

Mary Lou Harbaugh, 73, of Guttenberg, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, after a brave journey with cancer. 

Visitation was Monday, March 21, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman.

LaVonne Theresa Brimeyer, 79, of Holy Cross, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, surrounded by her five children.

Visitation was Monday, March 21, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Buena Vista, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Part-time community member Jake Kaminski, a pseudonym, has recently published his second novel, Beneath the Polish Moon. His first book, Shadow Wolves, an action-packed thriller, was the 2020 Silver Medal Winner of the Reader's Favorite International Book Competition, and Honorable Mention at the 30th Annual Writers Digest Competition. Shadow Wolves received high praise from Midwest Book Review; Writer's Digest; Kirkus Reviews and Reader's Favorite. "I am on track to have Shadow Wolves sequel, Crowe, ready for publication this upcoming fall," he noted.

City council approves fiscal year budget

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in regular session on March 14, approved the budget for the coming fiscal year and okayed a $500,000 grant application for water system improvements. Mayor Fred Schaub led council members Jane Parker, Steve Bahls, Michelle Geuder, Austin Greve and Mandy Ludovissy through the evening's agenda. City Manager Denise Schneider was also at the council table.

Violet Ann (Kress) Jennings, 69, of Dubuque, passed away on, Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Luther Manor Care Center in Dubuque.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 19, at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellevue. Family will greet friends 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
