One fatality in Friday fire

One person is dead following a residential fire late Friday evening south of Guttenberg. As of press time, the name has not been released pending positive identification.

Council hears comments on food truck ordinance

At the regular monthly meeting on Aug. 8, the Guttenberg city council heard concerns about food trucks, lowered the age for golf cart operators, and heard an update from the Community Vitality Advisory Committee. 

Mayor Fred Schaub led council members Mandy Ludovissy, Austin Greve, Jane Parker, Steve Bahls and Michelle Geuder through the evening's agenda. City Manager Denise Schneider was also at the council table.

Robert R. Wolf

Robert R. Wolf, 90, of Dubuque, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at home.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Visitation was held before services at the church. Military honors were accorded.

Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.

Nicholas J. Dietz

Nicholas J. Dietz passed away on Sept. 25, 2021.

He was born in May of 1945 in Postville.

The world has been less bright since Nicholas J. Dietz left it behind. Gone, but certainly not forgotten, are all the stories he used to tell, the “inventions” he came up with, and the projects he was always working on.

St. Mary /IC School announces closing

Citing a lack of qualified teachers, St. Mary Immaculate Conception School in Guttenberg last week announced its closing in a letter to parents.

The school, which serves students from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade, had recently hired a new principal, Angela Jones, and was preparing for the fall opening when the decision was made at a meeting of the school board last week.

Clayton Ridge fills principal position


Terri Thompson of Guttenberg has been hired as the Clayton Ridge Middle and High School Principal.

Guttenberg native Terri Thompson has been hired as the Clayton Ridge Middle and High School Principal. 

Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from William Penn University, Oskaloska. “I was recruited to play basketball at William Penn,” Thompson commented.

"Celebrate Guttenberg" this Saturday, Aug. 13

"Celebrate Guttenberg," an annual celebration featuring food, shopping specials and entertainment, is set for this Saturday, Aug. 13, sponsored by the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce.

This year's event will feature extended hours for the Saturday Farmer's Market, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  in the 400 block of South River Park Drive. There will be a coffee truck on hand at 8 a.m.

William R. “Bill” Wolfe

William R. “Bill” Wolfe, 84, of Guttenberg passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022.

Bill was born on Jan. 19, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Ronald and Isabel (Zeik) Wolfe. At a very young age he moved to Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Sharon A. Bungarden on April 11, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church in Waseca, Minn.

Janice Joan Bahls, 81, of Guttenberg, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Memorial services were Monday, Aug. 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman. Visitation was before services at the church. 

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Bruce Edward Rodenberg, 60, died Sunday, July 24, 2022, at his home in rural Guttenberg.

Visitation was Thursday, July 28, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home in Guttenberg. A private family memorial service was held.
