On Aug. 18 four generations of the Friedlein family of rural Guttenberg were honored at the Iowa State Fair as Century and Heritage Farm owners. To qualify for the prestigious award 40-acres of land must be owned by a family for at least 150 years.

Sweers inducted into Hall of Fame

On Aug. 26 former Clayton Ridge middle school teacher and coach Bob Sweers of Guttenberg was inducted into the inaugural Athletes Hall of Fame in his hometown of Britt during halftime of the season opener football game. 

"They introduced us at halftime and a reception followed at the country club," Sweers commented. "I was humbled and honored."

Marina rental agreement is council topic

At the regular monthly meeting on Sept. 12, the Guttenberg city council reviewed the new CV/Chamber director agreement and discussed marina slip rental rules.  

On hand for the meeting were Mayor Fred Schaub, councilmembers Michelle Geuder, Steve Bahls, Jane Parker, Austin Greve and Mandy Ludovissy. Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume attended in the absence of City Manager Denise Schneider.

GEIDC awarded $2.7 million to expand social services

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Gov. Reynolds announced $40 million in grant funding for 24 projects through the Nonprofit Innovation Fund, enabling Iowa non-profits to expand services to help more Iowans. 

The Guttenberg Economical and Industrial Development Committee (GEIDC) was awarded a grant through the fund in the amount of $2.7 million to expand social services access and to address Guttenberg’s senior housing needs.

James P. Deutmeyer

James P. Deutmeyer of Guttenberg passed away Sept. 3, 2022 after a battle with cancer.

Iowa Cremation is in charge of his final care. A celebration of life for Jim’s friends and family will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery.

Ramona Bahls

Ramona Bahls, 81, of Garnavillo died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, at Hawkeye Care Center in Asbury surrounded by family.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 6, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Music lineup for GermanFest

The Guttenberg GermanFest committee has a great lineup of musical entertainment for this year's celebration to be held Sept. 23-24, featuring both old and new favorites.

Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen will kick off the festival, playing from 6-10 p.m. Friday evening in the main festival tent. The four-piece polka band has been a crowd favorite at previous celebrations.

Local weekend events in Clayton County

Enjoy the upcoming September weekend by attending two popular annual events in southern Clayton County.

The Northeast Iowa Farm and Antique Association will present the 41st annual Plagman Barn Show Days on Sept. 16-17-18. The show grounds are located at 28384 Garber Road (C7X) 10 miles west of Guttenberg. The event features demonstrations on early farm and home practices and techniques, plus food, music, and other activities for the entire family.
