Jeffrey Brooks Strnad, 68, of Guttenberg, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Guttenberg City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lee Hagen, Nathan Hagen, Jareth Hagen, Chance Hagen, Chris Hagen and Chase Hagen.

Gene Phyllis (Palmer) Gallant, age 96, of Clayton, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, at her home surrounded by family. 

Family services will be at a later date. 

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. 

Gene was born on Sept. 6, 1926, in rural Garnavillo, the daughter of James and Hazel (Ausman) Palmer.

Avonique “Nika” and Jason Tipsword are the owners of “Dreamers Haven HEA,” a diversified homesteading operation focusing on dairy goat production. They are on a mission to educate Clayton County residents about dairy goats and consuming goat milk. 

“I grew up drinking raw milk from my family’s cow dairy,” Nika told The Press. “When the family decided to get out of the dairy industry, we all missed the fresh milk.”

Parker named National Runner of the Week

Loras College cross country runner Kassie Parker has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Runner of the Week in Division III after laying down one of the best times ever recorded at her level.

The Guttenberg native and former Clayton Ridge student/athlete took first place at the Augustana Interregional Invitational held in Augusta, Va., on Oct. 15, with a time of 20:00.1, setting a new program record. The time is lauded as one of the fastest 6K times ever from a women's Division III runner.

Germaine B. Ungs, 98, of Luxemburg passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2022, at Hawkeye Care Center, Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue from 8:45-9:45 a.m., at the funeral home prior to funeral services.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, conducted by Rev. Tyler Raymond.

City earns State Auditor award for efficiencies and innovations

The City of Guttenberg has received a Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Award from State Auditor Rob Sand. 

Guttenberg was recognized as the Best Performing City in its category and was one of nearly 30 winners in three categories — cities, counties and school districts — that participated in the contest.

Clayton Ridge graduate Adam Thein has carved out a name for himself as a mixing engineer, keyboardist, bassist, and producer specializing in indie and rock music. He and his wife, Carolina Hernandez, and their dog "Ludwig" currently reside in Houston, Texas.
