Clayton County residents prepare to caucus Feb. 3

Clayton County residents will join Iowans from across the state on Monday, Feb. 3, as the nation turns its attention to the results of the Iowa Presidential caucuses.

Voters from approximately 1,700 voting precincts across the state will meet to select delegates to their respective county conventions. The 99 county conventions will then choose delegates for state party conventions, who  in turn will subsequently head to the national conventions later this year.

Community service is an important component of an adolescent's life. It provides them with an opportunity to become actively connected to society and has a long-lasting positive impact on the community they live in. Volunteering also enables young adults to acquire valuable life skills, knowledge, and provide service to individuals who are most vulnerable.

Barnabetta R. Cline

Barnabetta Rae Cline, 93, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a brief illness.

With respect to Barnabetta’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. 

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Patricia J. Scheffert

Patricia J. Scheffert, 85, of Guttenberg, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.

Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Bootlegger's River Tavern in Millville is set to open its doors for a special Bistro Night on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. The casual tavern restaurant will offer a reservation-only five-course gourmet meal for diners interested in a more sophisticated dining experience.

$248,000 grant for Schiller Street project

Guttenberg was one of six communities recently awarded Iowa Great Places grants from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

Guttenberg received $248,000 to fund the creation of a gateway entrance at Schiller Street leading to streetscape improvements to attract Highway 52 travelers into the riverfront downtown and business district.

Bud Hyde

Buddy Lawrence “Bud” Hyde, 85, of Edgewood, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 24, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Funeral service with Military Rites will be at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Trinity Methodist Church in Edgewood, conducted by Pastor Mike Jackson.

Harlan R. Herkes

Harlan Raymond Herkes, 93, of Guttenberg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, at his home.

Private family services will be at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Harlan was born Nov. 25, 1926, to Neil and Mable (Ehlers) Herkes in Dubuque.
