Locals adopt puppies to benefit RABAS

These five puppies, born to a dog taken in by Crawford County Animal Control, were put up for adoption in exchange for a $500 donation, per pup, to Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter. (Submitted photo)

Crawford County Animal Control obtained an Australian shepherd cross dog in October. The dog was taken to Southwest Vet to be spayed, prior to be putting up for adoption. Dr. Bill Schultz’s pre-surgical exam revealed that the dog was in late pregnancy, so he decided to adopt the dog and name her Cinnamon. Eight days later, on Oct. 26, she whelped five puppies.

As a fundraiser for Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter (RABAS), Dr. Schultz decided to place the puppies up for adoption. One puppy is going to Dr. Schultz’s son. One puppy has a heart problem, so Dr. Schultz is keeping her. Three puppies were offered for adoption in exchange for a $500 donation to RABAS. Each of the new owners will receive about $300 in services through the donation, including first-year vaccines and spaying or neutering.

Board president running as official write-in

By Correne Martin

Five individuals will compete for three seats up for reelection in the Prairie du Chien Area School District, come the spring school board election in April. Two are incumbents, one an official write-in incumbent and the other two newcomers to the board.

According to District Administrator Bob Smudde, the incumbents whose name will be on the ballot April 3, include Lonnie Achenbach and Duane Rogers. New to the scene, Michael Higgins and Tom Petersen also turned in the necessary paperwork to have their names on the ballot for voters. Finally, incumbent Christine Panka, who is also the board president, will not appear on the ballot, but she has filed the proper papers with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board to be considered an official write-in candidate for the election.

The Prairie du Chien grapplers traveled to River Valley Thursday, Jan. 4 for a huge conference dual against a powerful River Valley team that is currently ranked sixth in the state in Division 2. PdC, ranked 4th in the state in Division 2, would show no fear on the road. Each team had seven medalists last weekend at Bi-State. Not only are both teams ranked, each team has several ranked wrestlers, returning state qualifiers, placewinners, and a champion.

Changes to your Courier Press

Change often comes with the arrival of a new year. So is the case with your hometown newspaper.

The Courier Press’ printing press and its associated technology have retired, meaning the newspaper is no longer printed on site at the Prairie du Chien office facility. Graphics Inc., of Calmar, Iowa, which has printed The Trader weekly and many special sections for the Courier, has taken on regular publication of the product.

With this transition, newsstand timing will be revised as our staff must allow for travel time to and from Prairie du Chien. Our goal is for each issue—every Monday and Wednesday—to be available for purchase in the Courier Press office by 2 p.m. on those days. Papers will then be delivered to newsstands in Prairie du Chien. Subscribers’ newspapers should still arrive at the same time they did previously.

Local driver overcorrects vehicle after losing control on snowy roads in Grant County

Two Bloomington residents were uninjured when a crash occurred on snowy roads in rural Patch Grove Christmas Eve, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 2:30 p.m.,  Danielle Ackerman, 20, was driving a 2001 Buick north on Fairground Road at Humphrey Road when she met a southbound car. With the snow on the road, Ackerman moved to the right in an attempt to avoid hitting the other vehicle. As she did so, the right tires of her car dropped off the paved surface. According to the crash report, she overcorrected, causing the car to cross the west side of the road, leave the roadway and enter a ditch at Humphrey Road. The rear left fender struck a utility pole there and the front of the car struck a stop sign, breaking off the wooden post. The car sustained moderate damage.
