Referendum question asks about elimination of state treasurer post

One referendum question voters in the April 3 election might be surprised to see is regarding the “elimination of state treasurer.”

According to a Feb. 28 public notice in the Courier Press, the question, on all ballots Wisconsin wide, asks if sections of the constitution should be amended and created to “eliminate the office of state treasurer from the constitution and to replace the state treasurer with the lieutenant governor as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands?”

This referendum is a result of 2017 Enrolled Joint Resolution 7, a copy of which can be viewed or downloaded from the Wisconsin Elections Commission website at http://elections.wi.gov/elections-voting/2018/spring.

158 marijuana plants found, two men arrested in Crawford County

During the early afternoon hours of March 19, the Boscobel Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resourses were dispatched to a wildfire on a hillside near 23600 Byers Road in the township of Marietta, Crawford County. 

As fire personnel attempted to extinguish the fire, they observed items they deemed suspicious and possibly associated with the manufacturing and use of illegal narcotics.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, along with a Wisconsin DNR conservation warden, began investigating the scene. While doing so, they noticed approximately 10 live and growing marijuana plants in the front window of the above address.

Teenage contest winner treats Villa Louis guests to recital

Playing classical and contemporary songs with no sheet music, Tristan Anderson delighted a small group gathered in the parlor of the Villa Louis.

A 15-year-old pianist shared his awe-inspiring gift of melodies on the Villa Louis Historic Site’s fully-restored Steinway Centennial D grand piano Sunday, March 25.

Tristan Anderson, of New Lisbon, treated a dozen parlor guests to an hour of classical and contemporary tunes, playing about 15 songs by memory with no sheet music in sight. His smooth movements at the keys created both gentle and intense tones on the Steinway.

Fire inside Waste Management's Bridgeport transfer station building

On March 28, at 4:48 a.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a fire at Waste Management, 62949 Vineyard Road, in the township of Bridgeport.

It was determined that a large pile of garbage was on fire inside a building referred to as the transfer station. The extent of the damage caused to the building has not been determined at this time. However, the Waste Management office building was not damaged. There were no injuries as a result of this incident. 

Assisting on scene were the Bridgeport Fire Department, Prairie du Chien Fire Department, Tri-State Regional EMS and the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Accident results in 7th OWI arrest for De Soto man

On March 27, at 8:25 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 82 (Lansing Dike), one mile west of Highway 35, in the township of Freeman.

Elijah A. Bark, 31, Gays Mills, was operating a 1986 Freightliner dump truck, loaded with approximately 55,000 pounds of sand, eastbound on Highway 82. Christopher J. Konichek, 61, De Soto, was following behind the dump truck, operating a 2002 Chrysler Voyager van. 

While both vehicles were traveling eastbound, Konichek struck the rear driver’s side of the dump truck with the passenger side of his vehicle. The dump truck sustained moderate damage and the van sustained severe front-end damage.

Highway 27 work begins on Tuesday

Bruce Richardson asked meeting officials how his wife is going to get to work in Boscobel, from their home on the southern County N. He was told she should be able to cross Highway 27, from County N (on the south) to County N (on the north) for all except about three weeks this summer.

The Highway 27 road construction project, from Prairie du Chien through Eastman, will begin April 3 and end around Nov. 21, according to information shared at a Monday evening meeting at the Salem United Methodist Church hall in Eastman. 

Around 45 people attended to hear a summary of the project and to ask questions of the officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and contractors The Kraemer Company and H. James & Sons. 

The work will start April 3 with milling in the area of Cipra Road, nearest Prairie du Chien. Then it will continue linearly from the south to the north, all the way to East Meadow Lane in Eastman.

Hwy. 35 road work within city of PdC starts Monday

Area residents have shared their confusion at recent road construction meetings regarding the Highway 35 construction starting Monday, April 2. It seems signs north of Prairie du Chien regarding the closure have caused the uncertainty. 

To clarify, the construction in question on Highway 35 has to do with the Marquette Road work within the city of Prairie du Chien. The project will occur between La Pointe and Mooney Streets, better known as, from Culver’s Restaurant to Eddie’s Irish Pub.

A public info meeting was held Wednesday, March 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the community room at Prairie du Chien City Hall. 

Staging locations and tentative time frames for the Marquette Road/Highway 35 project are as follows:

Lawler School Lofts

This apartment will have an interesting archway and windows. The apartments of Lawler School Lofts are of varying sizes and shapes.

A 31-vehicle garage is being built behind Lawler School Lofts.

Prairie du Chien man enjoys making maple syrup

It’s maple syrup season and Prairie du Chien’s Ben Hoksch is one who enjoys creating the tasty treat each year with a little help from his friends.

“It’s a lot of work,” said Ben. “But, I have fun doing it.”

Nerison will not seek re-election

State Representative Lee Nerison (R-Westby) announced Monday that he is not running for re-election in 2018 and will be retiring from the legislature at the end of his term. 

“I remember stopping by the State Capitol as a kid with my family on the way back from a Milwaukee Braves game. I keep the family picture we took that day in my Capitol office to remind me as a legislator of what a privilege it is to serve in the legislature. I never dreamed I would end up here, but it has been such an honor to work and serve with so many great people,” Nerison said.
