Passed out man busted for meth possession

On May 8, the Crawford County K-9 Unit was on patrol in Wauzeka Township along Highway 60 when the deputy observed a 1996 Chevrolet S10 parked in the Indian Mound Park Wayside. 

A lone man was observed sitting in the driver’s seat slumped over. The deputy awoke the man, identified as Ryan Leffler, 53, Wauzeka. Leffler was confused on what day it was and where he had come from. A lieutenant arrived on scene and they discovered Leffler had been passed out for approximately 5 hours. Leffler displayed signs of impairment and was found to have a bottle of urine hidden in his crotch area.

Head-on collision in Soldiers Grove

On May 8 at 5:09 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision on Highway 61 at Third Street in the village of Soldiers Grove.

Dawson R. Anderson, 19, Gays Mills, was operating 2008 Pontiac Vibe on Third Street, attempting to cross both lanes of Highway 61. Rebekah A. Ghormley, 57, Soldiers Grove, was operating a 2013 Honda Fit Hatchback southbound on Highway 61. As Anderson attempted to cross the highway, she pulled out in front of the Ghormley vehicle. Both vehicles collided in the roadway. Anderson stated she did not see the Ghormley vehicle as she attempted to cross both lanes of Highway 61.

Access to Marquette Road businesses hindered a couple days


Grading and base aggregate placement operations were done on Marquette Road late last week/early this week on stage 1 of construction.

Access to businesses on the 900 block of Marquette Road—including Hardee’s, Subway, Papa Murphy’s, American Family Insurance, Tropical Tan and Excalibur Laundromat—was hindered on several days this past week by construction on Wells Street, which has been the key thoroughfare for customers trying to patronize them since road work began.

Seneca got things started in the first inning when Kolton Chambers singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Seneca notched three runs in the third inning. Chambers, Matt Hall,and Joey Oppreicht each drove in runs during the inning.

Seneca hosted Weston in conference softball action on Monday, May 7. 

Seneca took the lead in the bottom of the first with Emily Garfoot getting on with a triple to right. Garfoot would then steal home to score the lone run of the inning.

Blackhawks host SWC match

Prairie du Chien Blackhawk golfers hosted a Southwest Wisconsin Conference match at the Prairie du Chien Country Club on Friday. 

The Hawks were unable capitalize on the home course advantage, finishing third with a team score of 191. Platteville won the event with a score of 159.

4-year-old dies in fall from moving pickup

A 4-year-old has died after falling from a moving pickup truck in Woodman Township the evening of May 4.

According to Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman, at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jason Wachter, 45, of Woodman, was traveling between farms, going east on County Highway C, approaching the intersection of Highway 133, in his 2003 Ford F450. Kage Wachter, 4, was sitting next to the passenger door, when the door opened and he fell from the truck, the sheriff’s report said.

Kage was struck by the rear tires and became unresponsive. Jason and another passerby began CPR until deputies, EMS, and MedFlight arrived. However, all the lifesaving efforts were unable to revive Kage, Sheriff Dreckman said.
