7-year-old sells 2,312 boxes of Girl Scout cookies

A goal-seeking first grade Girl Scout from Prairie du Chien sold 2,312 boxes of the famous cookies this year—enough to win herself a trip to Disney World. 

Natilie Mink, a second-year Daisy, spent six consecutive weekends, from Feb. 9 through March 19, selling local favorites Thin Mints, Caramel deLites (Samoas), Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs) S’mores and other flavors of the beloved cookies. To achieve the magical two-person vacation, one Girl Scout needed to sell at least 2,019 boxes in 2019. By setting mini goals along the way, Natilie sold that many, plus several hundred more, mainly sitting at a stand graciously allowed inside Nelson True Value in Prairie du Chien.

Ritchie, Teynor on to State Track

The Blackhawk track and field athletes that made it to the East Troy Sectional and got themselves ready for the day with a nice quiet drive. 

Kori Jaynes got things rolling with a nice 100m dash and just missed her career PR by 1/10th of a second, finishing the season in 10th place. Faith Dillman was up next in the 100 High Hurdles and finished the day in 12th place with a 17.94. Ben Teynor was up next in the 110 High Hurdles. Ben hit a 15.80 and qualified for the finals. Ben then hit a career PR - 15.42 in the finals and just missed out on going to state by 1/100th of a second, finishing in 6th place.

The Wauzeka-Steuben softball team won 6-5 over visiting and fourth-seeded De Soto Thursday, May 23 in regional softball action.

Top-seeded Wauzeka-Steuben improved their overall record to 21-0 and advanced to the sectional semifinal against second-seeded Highland at Wauzeka on May 28 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The winning pitcher was Tabitha Check. She gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, while fanning 6 and walking 4.

Top seeded Prairie du Chien came from behind to get past visiting and fourth seeded Wisconsin Heights 4-3 in a regional semifinal baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Heights took the early lead by scoring a run in the top of the second inning and another in the third to go up 2-0.

Prairie scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

There will be yet another crest of the Mississippi River this spring, which, unfortunately, is bound to affect the Prairie du Chien area’s economy now that the tourist season is about to be in full swing.

Thomas J. Panka

Thomas J. Panka, Sr., 79, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at his home in Prairie du Chien. 

Thomas James, the son of Thomas Henry and Helen Ann (Konichek) Panka, was born Dec. 28, 1939 in Prairie du Chien.

He graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1957 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1961. Tom worked for the Howe Ribstone Silo Company as well as Skyline Mobile Home Company before Gencor Bituma. He retired from Gencor Bituma after 28 years.

Donald J. Cipra

Donald J. Cipra, 85, of Prairie du Chien, died as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile-pedestrian accident on Thursday, May 16, 2019. 

He was born March 10, 1934, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Frank and Esther (Berntgen) Cipra. 

Don served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. He married Shirley Carl on Nov. 24, 1957, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Don worked as a sawyer for Hiram Walker in Prairie du Chien and later as a machinist for Wolf Machine Shop for many years. Wherever he worked, he was a hard and dedicated worker and a “jack of all trades.” Don was a faithful member of St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish. He was an active member of the Campion Council Knights of Columbus, serving for many years as financial secretary. He was fondly known as “Mr. Tootsie Roll.”

Enjoy a Slovak Dinner and culture, say farewell to pastor

Luanne Neumann, a member of St. Peter, spent two years in Bratislava, Slovakia, teaching high school-aged Evangelical Lutheran students religion and English literature in the English language.

Pastor Kyle Svennungsen served his first call as a pastor at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien for the past four years. He and his family are relocating to the Bratislava International Church in Slovakia.

One member of Prairie du Chien’s St. Peter Lutheran Church returned last fall from Bratislava, Slovakia, where she taught teenagers English for two years. Now, St. Peter’s pastor and his family are relocating to the same Slovak community so he can serve as leader of the international church.

River Ridge, Seneca, Wauzeka-Steuben at Lancaster Regional

River Ridge, Seneca and Wauzeka-Steuben competed in the Division 3 Lancaster Regional Track Meet Monday afternoon.

River Ridge won the girls meet with 93 points. Wauzeka-Steuben was ninth with 35 and Seneca was 11th with 22.

River Ridge was fourth in the boys meet with 90 points. Wauzeka-Steuben was sixth with 60 and Seneca was eighth with 30.

More of a conceptual plan approved for future city dog park

The Prairie du Chien Common Council approved plans Tuesday night for a future dog park in the city.

According to details brought by the parks and recreation department and dog park committee—consisting of Bob Witt, Dawn McCoy, Randy Paske and Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich—it is hoped this park could be completed in the fall of 2019.

In April last year, the city purchased about five acres of land from the Department of Transportation, off Lockwood Street, near the Campion Boat Landing, and designated it for the development of a 1.9-acre, fenced-in dog park. The costs are all going to be funded through donations, contributions and fundraising.
