La Riviere Park: Prairie du Chien’s hidden gem

This kiosk stands at the entrance of La Riviere Park and helps show visitors the extensive hiking areas.

By Peyton Meisner

La Riviere Park consists of 300-acres of land that features over six miles of excellent hiking trails and 50 plus miles of adjoining horse trails. The park is a mix of hardwood forest, grasslands and native prairies.

La Riviere Park was donated to the city of Prairie du Chien in 1977, by Dan La Riviere, as a public park and recreational area.

La Riviere was born March 9, 1898, in a large two-story house in Bridgeport Township. The house was constructed by Hercules Dousman. When La Riviere was 6-years-old, his family moved to where the current park is located. In 1914, his father Solomon purchased an additional 140 acres, putting the total acreage of the farm at around 300.

La Riviere attended St. Gabriel’s School and then the public high school.

Shots fired into house in Grant County

The act of shooting at rural road signs came close to tragedy on Father’s Day weekend, according to a Grant County homeowner.

An unknown person or persons fired four bullets through a road sign on Markley Hollow Road, Saturday, June 15, at about 8:15 p.m. Three of these bullets struck a house on Markley Hollow, two of which came through the walls of the dwelling, startling the homeowner who was sitting within a few feet of them. Grant County sheriff’s deputies recovered a 9-millimeter slug from an interior wall of the house.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this incident. An official report has yet to be released. Anyone with information about this should contact the sheriff’s department at (608) 723-2157.

The JWalkers Youth Group and the Holy Family Parish are making a difference in other parts of the United States. Since 2013, one year after the organization started, the teenagers, and their chaperones, have served week-long, yearly missions in storm ravaged communities across the country. A recent trip to the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahasee, Fla., saw their largest ever participation.

Forty high schoolers and 10 adults left Prairie du Chien June 7, and rode a Warco bus to the Florida Panhandle, to assist nine homeowners and one worship center still cleaning up and in need of repairs from Hurricanes Michael (2018) and Irma (2017).

Public hearing before city considers opening all streets to ATVs, UTVs

The blue lines on this map refer to the proposed routes within the city of Prairie du Chien that the Crawford County Ridge Runners would like the council to approve and designate for ATV and UTV usage.

By Correne Martin

Community stakeholders are encouraged to attend a public hearing Tuesday, July 2, where the Prairie du Chien Common Council will consider opening all city streets to ATVs and UTVs. The hearing starts at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall.

The city public works committee has met on this issue multiple times in the past year and is recommending the council consent to the use of these all-terrain machines on all roads, according to City Administrator Chad Abram. The committee is advising certain regulations, of course.
