Corps of Engineers seeks public input regarding master plan

There were several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel on hand to answer people’s questions regarding the Upper Mississippi River Master Plan the corps will be revising in the near future. The corps held a meeting at the Crawford County Administration Building on Monday to give a brief presentation and to get public input.

Hoppers advance to state tournament

Prairie du Chien got the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fourth to put pressure on Fennimore in the first game Monday, before falling 3-2 in the double elimination regional at St. Feriole Island. Everything turned out well, however, as PdC won the nightcap 8-3 to advance to the Class A State American Legion Tournament in Westby July 26-30. Dylan Coleman dives safely back to the bag to beat a pick-off attempt at first base versus Fennimore in the opening game Monday.

A short time later, Coleman popped up safe at second for a stolen base Monday afternoon against Fennimore in regional action.

Gavin Gillitzer fanned nine Fennimore batsmen in the opening game Monday.

Third baseman Ryan McGrath fields a grounder and eyes first base versus Fennimore.

 

The host Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers American Legion baseball team defeated Fennimore in the championship game 8-3 Monday night in a Class A Regional to advance to the state tournament to be held in Westby on July 26-30.

Prairie du Chien was 3-0 prior to Monday’s games in the double elimination tournament held at St. Feriole Island Ballpark. Fennimore was 2-1, having lost to Prairie on Saturday. The Hoppers had to win one game to win the regional title and advance to state. Fennimore had to beat Prairie du Chien twice.

Kickapoo Caverns tour reveals area names spotted inside

Henry Bukoski, of Fennimore, signed his name in the registration room at the end of the Kickapoo Caverns in 1927. His name actually appeared twice. It appears many others left their signature there as well. (Photos by Emily Schendel)

The Kickapoo Caverns, now owned by the Mississippi Valley Conservancy, opened up for tours July 13, for a limited amount of participants.

Some of the few who were granted a tour of the caverns recently explored their wonder.

The Kickapoo Caverns, now owned by the Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC), opened up for tours July 13, for a limited amount of participants. 

The caverns were discovered sometime in the late 1800s by a lead prospector and, after some work and years, it opened up as a show cave in 1947, operating all the way until 2011. MVC purchased the property last year and will continue to honor the former owner’s wishes of keeping the property in its natural pristine state.

Fire department’s brush truck outfitted by real community effort

The Prairie du Chien Fire Department has a brand new brush truck, a 2019 Ford F350, from winning bidder Blackhawk Motors (which is now Fillback).

According to Fire Chief Jeff Boughton, acquiring a truck like this one brings together a real community effort. 

The $32,000 truck was purchased at a discounted state price with reassigned capital funds the department had planned for another project the city elected not to do this year.

The chance to see the sassy Indie/Roots singer and musical powerhouse Sarah Grace, a 2018 finalist from The Voice, is now. She will be in Prairie du Chien Saturday, July 27, performing on the Prairie Dog Blues Festival stage at 4:30 p.m.

From Houston, Texas, Sarah Grace’s performance of “Amazing Grace” on The Voice, can be described as her signature moment, establishing her as a legitimate artist. The recording immediately shot to #3 on the overall iTunes charts, gained 1 million YouTube views, and has lived on the Gospel/Christian charts of iTunes ever since. The young trumpet major at the prestigious High School for the Performing Arts now tours nationally with her band, Sarah Grace and The Soul, comprised of equally-talented young musicians. They have won multiple awards, including being named as the “Best Newcomer” for 2019 by the Houston Press.

PdC guardsman to soon deploy to Afghanistan

With an improvised pole that consisted of a tree limb, parachute cord and metal pop-top, Spc. Carter Titlbach caught a bluegill outside of Fort McCoy.

The night of outdoor revelry, which included some fishing, marked the end of a recent round of training.

Titlbach, 23, is readying for his first deployment to Afghanistan.

Hoppers eliminate Viroqua

Both teams were strong on the pitcher’s mound Sunday, but Prairie du Chien eliminated Viroqua 3-1. 

In the first inning, Prairie got their offense started when Dylan Coleman hit a solo homer.

Prairie du Chien pulled away for good with one run in the third inning. In the third, Drake Coleman singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Prairie du Chien defeats Fennimore

The Prairie du Chien Hoppers defeated Fennimore 5-2 on Saturday after taking the lead late in the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hoppers tied things up at two.

The game was tied at two with Prairie du Chien batting in the bottom of the fifth when Grant Martin singled on the first pitch of the his at-bat to drive in a run to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Hoppers.

The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers American Legion baseball team ran off with the lead late in the game in a 2-1 victory over Viroqua on a sweltering Friday night. The game was tied at one with Prairie du Chien batting in the top of the 10th when Drake Coleman doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring what turned out to be the winning run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Prairie du Chien pitchers struck out six, while Viroqua pitchers sat down 16.
