On Feb. 8, 2020, Kathryn E. Umhoefer finally found peace after a long battle with complications involving a stroke that happened over 10 years ago, which left her non-verbal and paralyzed. Despite these hardships, Kathie did her best to live life to the fullest. Her charm and humor allowed her to continue the relationships she had before the stroke and the ability to make new ones.

La Crosse businessman Dan Kapanke announced Feb. 12, he will run to return to the state Senate. Kapanke will run in the 32nd Senate district, a seat he previously held for over six years, which includes all of La Crosse and Crawford counties, most of Vernon and a portion of Monroe county.

Man faces many meth related charges

On Feb. 9, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a 2000 Dodge Neon being operated by Ricky Arentz, 48, De Soto, in the township of Freeman. As the deputy approached the vehicle, Arentz accelerated and fled. The deputy pursued Arentz for several miles before Arentz attempted to turn around in a wayside and became stuck in the deep snow. Arentz fled on foot for several yards before being apprehended.

Two area men arrested for methamphetamine violations

On Feb. 6, at 11:20 p.m., a deputy of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop in the city of Boscobel for a violation that occurred in Crawford County.   

The deputy made contact with the driver and identified him as Xai Vang, 25, La Crosse.

The Wauzeka-Steuben School District will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s All-Purpose Room.
