Swimmers finish sixth at conference meet

ESP’s Ava Pensel swims the final link of the 100-meter individual medley July 9 at the Northeast Iowa Conference swim meet in Waukon. The 13-year-old standout swimmer finished second in the event and added another silver medal and a bronze to her collection of hardware before the day was over.

The Elkader Strawberry Point (ESP) swim team finished sixth overall July 9 at the all-day Northeast Iowa Conference swim meet in Waukon.  The nine member teams took part.
Decorah won with 628 points followed by Cresco (492), host Waukon (421), Calmar (402) and West Union with 370.
ESP finished in sixth with 300 points, ahead of Manchester (293), Sumner (266) and Monona/Postville with 222.
Larae Engelhardt, who coaches the Elkader side of the team, was pleased with the finish.
“Six out of nine. Since we don’t have a lot of boys, that’s pretty good!” said Engelhardt.
Half the events at a swim meet are swum by boys.  Although ESP is blessed with some talented boys, they are short of numbers and forfeit events and points because they have no entry.

Whether you’re harvesting your 30th season of heirloom tomatoes or have never before planted a plot, there’s a place for you in Elkader’s Community Garden. Volunteers of all skill levels are needed to maintain the garden. In return, workers can help themselves to the harvest.
Located adjacent to St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery on the south edge of town, the Community Garden was established two years ago by members of St. Joe’s congregation. This year’s plot is similarly sized and as mid-summer approaches, it’s beginning to show the fruits of the volunteers’ labors: Squash plants are heavy with blooms, the potato patch has been neatly hilled and cabbages are beginning to burst out of their dense-leaf covers.

A few years ago when the economy was down and travel costs were up, the concept of “staycations” was launched to encourage close-to-home getaways. A side benefit of the concept was discovering or re-discovering “backyard gems.”

THERE’S A NEW GAME IN TOWN

By Kenny Slocum

Clayton County Naturalist

In a previous life, I had a limited understanding of Iowa’s fascinating ecology. Mostly, my “identification” skills were limited to plants that stung or itched—and various scars would indicate my skills were lacking. Occasionally, I could recognize a delicious berry—a mulberry or blackberry if the timing was right—but generally I observed the wisdom of my mother who insisted I avoid putting unidentified things in my mouth.
