Harold Ebel

Harold Kloehn Ebel, 94, of Moose Lake, MN died Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake following a stroke suffered on August 1 while playing golf at Moose Lake Country Club. 

Harold was born in Lidgerwood, ND on September 22, 1921, the second of six children born to Paul and Ella (Kloehn) Ebel. In 1923, his family moved to Moose Lake, where they operated a farm on Soldier Rd. Harold graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1939 and Hibbing Junior College in 1941. He enlisted for military service following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he served fo rfour years in the US Navy, rising to the rank of Ensign.

Glen Gottschalk

Glen  L. Gottschalk, 69, of Burlington, died at 7:15 PM Monday, August 8, 2016, at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Born March 2, 1947, in Elkader, IA, he was the son of Elmer J. and Leona A. Gusta Gottschalk. On April 22, 1972, he married Deborah “Debbie”  Hayes in Maquoketa, IA. 

Glen was a manager for Kinney Shoes for over 20 years, worked in retail sales at JCPenney and prepared taxes at H&R Block.

Niane Meyer

Niane Meyer, age 64, of Tama, Iowa died Wednesday evening, August 10, 2016 at Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco where friends may call from 10:00 am until time of services. Burial will follow in St. Kieran Cemetery, rural Cresco, Iowa.

TOOTING HER OWN HORN!

Mid-summer, as we are in now, typically prompts students and faculty to look back upon the last academic year and to look forward to making new memories in the next one. This is especially true for one gifted teenager from Volga who loves tooting her own horn…literally! She’s done so halfway across the country and for nearly half her life. She is Emily Duff, daughter of Pete and Karla Duff, and an incoming senior this fall at Starmont High School.

Iva Dean Wilker

Iva Dean Wilker, 85, of Elkader, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at the Elkader Care Center.  

Iva Dean Cora Louise (Hoth) Wilker was born on October 4, 1930, in Elkader, to Willis and Emma (Bahls) Hoth. She was baptized February 22, 1931, at Lutheran Lion’s Church in Clayton Center, and was confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. She attended country school through the eighth grade. Iva Dean graduated from Paris Academy of Beauty, in Cedar Rapids.
