Vergean Schmidt

Vergean Mae Schmidt 83 of Farmersburg, Iowa, died Friday April 21, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. Vergean M. Freitag was born April 18, 1934, in Elkader. She was the daughter of Glendor and Vera (Breitsprecher) Freitag. She received her education in Elkader, graduating from Elkader High School with the class of 1951. On September 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Carl Schmidt at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Robert D. Halverson, 78, of Elkader, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Interment will follow at East Side Cemetery in Elkader

MEET POLICE CHIEF MITCH SEITZ


Elkader’s new police chief Mitch Seitz spent time last week getting to know some of the town’s youngest residents.

Mitch Seitz, who was hired last month as Elkader’s new police chief, is now on the job. Seitz assumed his new duties April 17.

Born in West Union, Seitz currently lives in Postville with his wife, Brittni, and the couple’s nine-year-old son, Carter. The family plans to move to Elkader soon.

Richard Clinton

Richard D. Clinton, 66, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on January 4, 1951, in Littleport the son of Lloyd L. and Winifred Joyce (Conner) Clinton. Richard was raised in the area and graduated from Central Community School in Elkader in 1969.

Richard served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973. He was united in marriage to Linda Schwietert in 1974. Together they lived in Oelwein and they divorced in 1979.

New ordinance for off-road

The Clayton County Board of Supervisors has approved an ordinance that allows off-road utility vehicles to operate on county gravel roads, except level C roadways.  A person can also operate a vehicle on a paved county road only so far as to reach a permissable county gravel road. The ordinance does not apply to all-terrain vehicles.

Cora Koons May 7, 1931 to April 12, 2017

Cora Lou Koons, 85, of Elkader, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa. She was born May 7, 1931, at Fayette, to Dale and Willa (Sperry) Owen. Cora Lou was united in marriage to Julian A. Koons on July 29, 1951. Three children were born to this union.

Jewell Chappell June 14, 1921 to April 11, 2017

Jewell Chappell, 95, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Jewell Janet Hulverson was born on June 14, 1921, to Lawrence and Myra (Wells) Hulverson, on a farm near Elkader. When she was nine months old the family moved to a farm west of Volga City. In 1937, they moved to Volga. She attended country school for eight years, then to high school in Volga, where she graduated with the class of 1939.

She was united in marriage to Glenn Chappell on November 9, 1939, at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, rural Strawberry Point. Five children were born to this union. Together the couple farmed.

Central boys’ golf now 3-0

The Central boys’ golf team won a match against Postville at Elkader on April 10th with a score of 172-228. Medalist was Nick Sylvester with a 40 from Central. Runner-up was Sumner Smith, 42, also from Central. Other scores from Central were Andy Seeland, 49, and Caleb Jones, 51. Hayden Hansel shot a 52.

Gift of sight - Donation benefits Algerian resident


Jeff Werger, who died last June, lived in Garnavillo with his daughter, Jayda, and wife, Jessica. Jeff was an organ donor; one of his corneas went to an Algerian citizen.

Nearly 5,000 miles from Elkader in the North African sovereign state of Algeria lives someone with a unique connection to Northeast Iowa. All that is known about the person is this: He or she has received a priceless gift from a Clayton County husband and father. It was a gift the man had hoped to delay giving for several years but was nonetheless prepared to offer when the time came.
