Verla Bente

Verla May Fern Bente, 71, of Garnavillo, Iowa, died at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City on Saturday, May 13, 2017. She was born November 17, 1945, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the daughter of Everd and Opal (Noack) Tuecke. Verla was raised and educated in the area graduating from Guttenberg High School in 1964. She received a bachelors in elementary education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

Gertrude Brase

Gertrude Ann Brase was taken to heavenly glory by her Savior Jesus Christ on May 6, 2017 at the age of 82. Her funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10th at Trinity Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, Iowa, with Rev. Andrew Preus officiating. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9th at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, and an hour before the service at the church.

LaNida Severidt

LaNida Severidt, 95, of State Center, Iowa, passed away May 10, 2017, at the Madrid Home for the Aging, Madrid, Iowa.

A visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 14, at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home.  Funeral services were Monday, May 15th, in the chapel at Madrid Home for the Aging.

FIRE DEPARTMENT GETS DONATION FOR NEW RESCUE SUIT


Elkader Fire Chief Scott Marmann, third from left, accepts a donation from PeopleService. Three employees of the company were on hand at the presentation: Kim Werger, Dennis White, and Jared Burkle. The money will be used to help purchase a new water rescue suit.

There’s an ironic twist to a donation given last week to the Elkader Fire Department in honor of a recent daring rescue: The gift came from a company that employs two of the people involved in the heroic effort.

Robert Halverson

Robert D. Halverson, 78, of Elkader, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Robert Dorf Halverson was born August 29, 1938, in Lansing, IA to Dorf and Viette (Henderson) Halverson. Bob graduated from Lansing High School in 1956. He then attended the University of Iowa for two years. 

He was united in marriage to Sharon Walters on June 24, 1961, at the Presbyterian Church in Rossville, IA. The couple were blessed with four wonderful children.

Ronald Palas

Ronald L. Palas, 65, of Arlington, Iowa died on Tuesday morning, May 2, 2017 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.. Monday, May 8, at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington, with Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. There was a visitation from 3 to 7 p.m.. on Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment was at Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington.

Aloha Franklin

Aloha C. Franklin, 91, of Marion, IA, passed away on April 28, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. She was born in Antigo, WI, on July 11, 1925, to Fred and Fran (Fosterling) Rusch.

Aloha was united in marriage to X.L. (Frank) Franklin on August 30, 1946, in Seattle, WA. She was employed by the Linn-Mar Community Schools for 20 years.  Aloha was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection.  She was also an organ donor.

“Drill Sergeant” Finley - Keeping fitness class on their toes

They call her the “drill sergeant.”

While this certainly gives you a bold first impression, Diane Finley doesn’t consider herself much of an expert in combat training or any other strenuous activity.

Finley leads a workout class called Fit & Flex at the Elkader Fitness Center. The class has a loyal following of about 30 women, ages 60 to 87.
