Irene Petsche

Irene Petsche, 85, of McGregor, Iowa died Sunday, August 20, 2017 at Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. Irene Catherine was born to Casper and Mary (Lucher) Schaefers on May 15, 1932, in Clayton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, Iowa. Irene attended Garnavillo Catholic School through the eighth grade.

Louis Matt

Louis Matt, III, age 91, of Garnavillo, IA, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, IA. He was born on June 1, 1926, on the family farm near St. Olaf. 

Louis attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Garnavillo and later attended high school in Monona. On February 27, 1954, Louis was united in marriage with Armella “Amy” Frommelt at St. Mary’s Church in Guttenberg. Together Louis and Amy raised their children on the family farm near St. Olaf. Farming and feeding cattle were his passions. Louis and Amy enjoyed traveling, especially to visit family. In later years, Louis filled his days with long walks.

Jeffrey Clinton

Jeffrey Lee Clinton, 53, of Chandler, AZ passed away July 30, 2017. Jeffrey was born May 29, 1964, in Rapid City, SD. 

As a result of a motorcycle accident, Jeffrey was a quadriplegic for 29 years. He coordinated and was a lone participant in “Wheels to the White House” in 1995. He wheeled himself from Chandler, AZ to the White House in Washington D.C., where he met with actor Christopher Reeve to bring attention to spinal cord injury and research.

Welcome faculty and staff - Six new faces at Central Schools

Classes being today at Central Community Schools and in addition to new room assignments, new classes and new routines, students will find a few new faces, as well. The district has hired four teachers, a school nurse and a social worker.

Though Central students got a summer break from classroom work, administrators stayed busy with myriad responsibilities including several related to the upcoming improvements made possible by the successful bond vote last spring. The Register asked Superintendent Nick Trenkamp questions about the work he’s doing to move the renovation project forward. Here are his responses:

Larry Purman

Larry LaVern Purman, 72, of Elkader, died suddenly Sunday, July 23, 2017, at home in Elkader. He was born October 29, 1944, in Guttenberg, to Cecil Gayle and Wanda Mae (Stewart) Purman.  He graduated from Central High School in Elkader in 1962, and then attended school for diesel mechanics in Kansas City, MO.

Larry served in U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Training Center and was honorably discharged.

On August 7, 1965, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Radabaugh at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. The couple was blessed with three children.

Betty McMahon

Betty Jean Orvis McMahon, 87, of Elkader, passed away Monday, August 14, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born September 22, 1929, to Vern and Lilly (Olson) Trudo in Postville. She graduated from Postville High School with the class of 1947.

She married Dean Orvis on November 2, 1947, at Norway Lutheran Church. One daughter was born to them. Betty worked as a medical transcriber for many clinics around the country. She enjoyed gardening and reading; however, spending time with her family was what she loved most of all.

Galen Griffin

Galen Walter Griffin, 92, of Manchester, Iowa, formerly of Elkader, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at Marietta’s Place in Manchester. He was born on February 12, 1925, in Masonville, the son of Walter and Hazel (Morehouse) Griffin. Galen attended rural country school near Masonville, graduating from Lamont High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, honorably serving his country during World War II. Following his service, he graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

Randall Dennler

Randall Dennler, 58, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Elkader, Iowa died Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln. Randy was born September 19, 1958 to LaVern L. and Ivanelle E. “Ivy” (Erickson) Dennler and grew up in Elkader, Iowa. He graduated from Central Community High School, Elkader, and earned an Ag Business degree from Kirkwood Community College. Randy enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and was an avid Chicago Bears football fan. His greatest joy was his daughter, Randi, who he dearly loved.

Master Gardeners - Group hopes garden idea takes root

The newly revitalized Clayton County Master Gardeners group wants to plant an idea in the minds of other gardeners: If your vegetable patch has produced more produce than you can consume, consider donating your surplus to the Clayton County Food Shelf.
