Parent Centers - Program gets moms, dads involved

A program launched a few years ago by Central teachers Katie Wiley and Andrea Zittergruen continues to get high marks from local parents and grandparents. Called “Parent Centers,” it opens to the doors to elementary classrooms on a regular basis to moms and dads—and sometimes, grandparents—who want to volunteer in their youngster’s room.

SCHOOL LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

One of the many areas Central has been working on improving is community involvement. I feel education can be strengthened through partnerships in our community. “It takes a village to raise a child” is a proverb Wikipedia defines as, “A child has the best ability to become a healthy adult if the entire community takes an active role in contributing to the rearing of the child.”

Pearl Schaefers

 Pearl Agnes Schaefers, age 77, of Guttenberg, IA, died Thursday, November 16, 2017, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born on February 18, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Naber) Gaul.

Raymond Cousins

Raymond Clifford Cousins Jr., 84, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the V.A. Central Iowa Health Care System, Des Moines, Iowa. 

Ray was born in Elkader, IA to Raymond Sr. and Edith Cousins. He graduated from Elkader High School. After high school, he served in the Air Force from August 1953-July 1957, where he was stationed in Germany working in electronic communications maintenance.

Delpha Bowman

Delpha Emma Matilda (Appel) Bowman, 94, of Garber, died Saturday, November 4th at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. She was born on April 27, 1923, in Clayton County to Frieda Appel. Frieda married Fritz Klinkenberg on January 30, 1924, and raised Delpha on a farm near Saint Olaf, Iowa.

Delpha graduated from Elkader High School and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette where she studied normal training to become a schoolteacher. After graduation, she began teaching at Mecklenburg school in rural St. Olaf. During World War II she dispensed ration stamps to the rural people of the area as most goods were rationed during the war.

Kenneth French

Kenneth (Kenny) Gene French, age 88, passed away peacefully at home with the love of his life by his side on Monday, November 6, 2017. Kenneth was born July 22, 1929, in Postville, Iowa to LeRoy and Florence (Baldwin) French. 

 Kenny was united in marriage to Geraldine (Gerry) A. Shea on March 17, 1955, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa. Together, they had seven children: Terry (Dan) Sullivan, Dodgeville, Wisconsin; Sharon Taylor, Arlington, Iowa; Jeanne (Mark) Melon, Guttenberg, Iowa; Cindy (Steve) Wendl, Anamosa, Iowa; Jayme French, Manchester, Iowa; Gary (Jennifer) French, Sydney, Australia; and Merry French, Aurora, Iowa.

Student projects - Harnessing wind; saving birds, trees

With winter just around the corner, five Central students are working feverishly to complete a couple of projects designed to lessen the impact of cold weather on birds and trees. Two others are looking into green roofs and wind turbines. All are students in Ann Gritzner’s Global Science class, which requires a hands-on project that addresses an environmental issue. Here’s a look at their projects.
