Edna Grace Thiese

Edna Grace Thiese, 101, passed away June 23, 2018 at Elkader Care Center, due to natural causes.
Edna was born March 18, 1917, near Independence, IA, the middle one of three daughters to Clarence and Lela Zimpfer. During her childhood, she moved to Oelwein, Volga, Garber, and Elkader with her parents, wherever her father could find employment, helping with farming.
Edna Zimpfer attended and graduated from the Elkader School. She attended Junior College in Elkader after winning a one year scholarship. She earned her teaching certificate after completing two years at Junior College. She found employment teaching in a country school in rural Elkader, near the home of Dorothy and Herman Thiese. She met their son, Oliver, while she was a boarder at the Thiese home. Oliver proved to be a real gentleman in helping Edna load firewood into the schoolhouse’s wood stove on cold winter mornings. He also assisted in repairing books.

Leslie C. Klink, 91, of Elkader, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, June 22, 2018 in Elkader. A celebration of life was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, with Rev. Jon Haack officiating. The family greeted friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Peace United Church of Christ, and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Milo Frieden

Milo Frieden February 4, 1933 to June 16, 2018

Milo W. Frieden, 85, of Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Elgin, IA passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. Milo William was born February 4, 1933, to William and Eliza (Moore) Frieden in Elkader, IA. He attended school in Elgin. Milo joined and proudly served in the United States Army. 

Milo was united in marriage with Marilyn DeWitte on April 28, 1954, in Arlington, Iowa.  He farmed the family farm in the Elgin area for many years. Milo also worked at the Casino in Marquette, Iowa for eleven years, retiring in 2006.

WarEagle baseball

WarEagle Nate Helle is safe at home, scoring the team’s only run in the first game of a doubleheader against North Fayette Valley. NFV took the first game 9-1. Game 2 ended in the Tigerhawks’ favor, as well. The final score was 4-0. The WarEagles faced Waukon on June 12. They lost the game, 10-3. On June 14, Clayton Ridge/Central faced New Hampton, who took the game, 5-0. They also dropped a game to MFL MarMac the following day. The final score was 9-0.

hen Elkader businessman and mayor Josh Pope was ready to sell JNJ pizza, he didn’t have to look far for a new owner. His longtime manager, Bryton Rentschler, was ready to take on the restaurant where he’d worked for more than seven years.
