The Prairie du Chien girls volleyball team traveled to Westby on Tuesday night for a regional match. And, what a match it was!

It took a little bit for the Hawks to settle in and the home team took advantage of it. Westby jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. Timeout Prairie. The girls started to fight their way back in the set. After a service error by Westby that made the score 15-10, senior setter Abby Feye set up junior Lily Krahn, senior Hope Martin, and senior Makenzie Knapp for kills on three consecutive plays.

Timeout Westby. Moving forward, with the score tied at 18, Lily would get two more kills followed with an error by Westby to give the Hawks a 21-18 lead. Lily would get a couple more kills set up by Abby, and Abby set up Hope on game point and she put the ball and the set away. The Hawks went on a 22-10 run to win the first set. Senior libero, Macey Banasik, had 9 digs in the first set to lead the Hawks defense that refused to let any ball hit the floor. Lily also had 9 digs and sophomore Makenna Forde added 6 digs.

Onto the second set. Westby came out fighting and jumped out to an early 5-point lead. The teams continued to battle, exchanging kills and errors with great defense from both teams. With the Hawks down 17-10, Abby and Lily hooked up for a back row kill and then, after a long rally, Abby and Hope hooked up for a kill. On the next play, Westby had an error followed by an ace by Lily and suddenly the Hawks were only down 3. However, Westby won the next 3 points to take a 20-14 lead. Timeout Hawks. Out of the timeout, Westby won 5 of the next 6 points to win the second set 25-15.

The Hawks started strong in the third set defensively. Strong back row play by Macey, Makenzie, Abby, Lily, Makenna, and junior Katelyne Lutz, who stepped in to serve, was key in the strong start. The front row blocking of senior Clare Teynor, Hope, Makenzie, Lily, and Makenna also stymied the Westby hitters. That, coupled with 3 kills apiece by Hope and Lily and 1 by Clare, all set up by Abby, helped the Hawks jump out to an early 15-9 lead that they refused to relinquish. With the score 17-10, Abby and Lily hooked up for a couple more kills and an error by Westby gave the Hawks a commanding 20-10 lead. Timeout Westby. Towards the end of the set, Abby and Makenzie teamed up for a kill, and an error by Westby gave the Hawks set point. On set point, Clare and Makenzie teamed up for a block to win the third set.

Onto the fourth set. Westby jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The girls kept fighting and they were down 2, 11-9 after the first 20 points of the set, but after a few errors, the score was 15-10 Westby. Timeout Hawks. The teams battled back and forth over the next few points, but after a kill by Westby and an error by the Hawks, Westby was up 19-12. Timeout Prairie. The girls kept battling, and with kills by Clare, Lily, and Makenzie, they stayed in the set, but they couldn’t close the gap and Westby won the fourth set 25-17 forcing a fifth and final set.

The girls started strong in the fifth set with a kill by Lily, an error by Westby, a kill by Clare, and a block by Clare to take a 4-0 lead. Westby answered with a 5-point rally, but off of a nice serve received by Makenna and a set by Abby, Clare silenced the crowd with a kill to even the score at 5. The two teams went back and forth over the next few points and the Hawks were the first team to 10 and held a 2-point lead. Westby won the next 2 points to tie the set at 10, but the Hawks did not shy away. Clare and Abby teamed up for a kill, followed by an ace by Makenzie, and then a kill by Makenna left Westby down 3 and they were forced to call a timeout. Westby battled to stay in the set and scored 2 points after the hawks had a match point to make the score 14-12 and forced Prairie to call a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Abby and Lily hooked up one last time for a kill to win the set and the match and keep the season alive.

Next, the Hawks play at Platteville at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
