Like all other events, Prairie du Chien’s Oktoberfest will look different this year.

The revelry of people gathering in the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens to enjoy food, adult beverages, music and dancing will not be part of the fun. Yet, there are a couple events happening that can still promote a more leisurely side of Oktoberfest and local German heritage this weekend.

A disc golf tournament and bingo are happening Saturday, Oct. 17.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on the island, all ages and skill levels of disc golf players are invited to try their hands at the sport. There is a fee to participate and also a cash payback for winners. Sponsored by the Rotary Club and established in 2013, Prairie du Chien’s 3,800-foot course features 18 baskets in the flat and scenic, park-like venue that is St. Feriole Island.

From 12 to 2 p.m., Hoffman Hall will host bingo. Adults as well as children are welcome to relish in a fun, family experience for a minimal fee. Children must come accompanied by an adult. Cash prizes will be awarded. For more information, contact Dana at (608) 412-1407.

On top of these offerings, Mississippi Meats has stepped forward to support the Oktoberfest committee, as they’ve done in the past. The meat shop is selling Oktoberfest Potosi brats throughout the month of October, with some of the proceeds going back into the festival.

“These brats are the only ones of their kind in the world,” Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich said. “They sold out last year.”

Looking ahead to Oktoberfest in 2021, the third weekend in October as always, the local organizers have already locked into a contract with a unique polka band called LIVEwire, from the Green Bay area.

“They’re very different than we’ve ever seen here. They cater to the younger ages. They play 60s to 80s music from Johnny Cash to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they put polka music to it,” Ulrich said.

He added that the Oktoberfest Singers from La Crosse are also coming back for next year’s Prairie du Chien festival.

“Planning for the future, we’ve got some really good stuff coming,” he said. “We’ve also enlisted the support of more energetic community volunteers who are stepping up.”

Ulrich said Oktoberfest is growing and is likely to even include more Friday evening events in 2021 “that we feel will be well received.”
