Thalia Eileen Sadewasser, 63, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020. She battled cancer for the past three years.

A gathering to celebrate her life was held Saturday, Sept. 26, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a time of sharing was led by Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle.

Thalia was born April 24, 1957, in Iowa City. The youngest (and favorite) child of James Newkirk and Mary Eileen (O’Neil) Newkirk/Scheetz. She attended University High (U-High) until its closing in 1971, then transferred and graduated from Iowa City High School in May 1975. She continued her education at Kirkwood Community College which resulted in a 40-year career in the Information Technology field. Thalia worked for the University of Iowa ADP/ITS, UI Foundation and retired in January 2020 from UI Hospital & Clinics.

Thalia married Jerry Schump in 1979, they had a son, Michael, and later divorced. She then married Mark Sadewasser in August 1995, celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. They have two daughters, Rachael and Rosetta. She enjoyed living in Iowa City and visiting Guttenberg whenever possible to be with Mark’s family. Both Mark and Thalia came from large families and enjoyed time with relatives.

She attended First United Methodist church for over 30 years, was a Sunday school teacher, and served in several church groups. Thalia enjoyed trying new activities like hatchet throwing, even though she never improved and was a danger at it. She also took golf lessons but would rather just walk the course than play it. She had a colorful personality, always working on home improvements and various crafts.

Thalia is survived by her husband Mark; children, Michael Schump of West Branch, Rachael (Daniel) Goldenstein of Iowa City, Rosetta Sadewasser of Iowa City, and stepson, Brian Allen Sadewasser of North Liberty; siblings, Kathleen (John) Schnoebelen of Iowa City, Sherry (Elson) Hauenstein of New Cumberland, Penn., Andrew (Julie) Newkirk of West Des Moines, Shelia Vincent of North Liberty, Nora (Dennis) Hartman of Madison, Wis., and too many nieces, nephews, and cousins to name.

Thalia was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Leo Scheetz; father-in-law, Donald Sadewasser; brother, Kevin; brothers-in-law, Russell Vincent, Thomas Sadewasser, and James Sadewasser, and sister-in-law, Julie Jo Zittergruen.

The family would like to thank Iowa City Hospice for their wonderful support in the past months.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Iowa City Hospice or First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Online condolences may be sent to family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
