The Central cross-country program hosted its only home meet of the season this past week at the Elkader golf course, and the varsity girls provided the excitement, all running season best times.

They were once again led by medalists Hannah Asche, who finished seventh with a 21:28, and Delaney Scherf, who ran a 22:20 time to finish in 13th in a field of 54 runners.

The other team members that performed season best times included Taylor Moser (27th - 24:27), Jaydin Dettman (34th - 25:18), Haley Mueller (39th - 25:43),  Carly Kluesner (48th - 27:40), Eva Embretson (52nd - 28:35), Maci Kluesner (53rd - 28:45) and Mylee Wingert, who finished 51st with a time of 28:06 and ran a personal record for the course.

Despite the personal success, the team, against stiff competition, finished in fifth place overall with a score of 121, beating only MFL MarMac. The team from South Winneshiek won the meet with a score of 36.

On the varsity boys side, Central sent out only two runners. In a field of 87, Corey Weber finished 47th with a 21:18 and Parker Vaughn came in 52nd, running a 22:07. With only two runners, they could not compete in the team event, which was also won by South Winneshiek.

“The great weather and a fast course helped our team to numerous season bests and one course PR. The success for our runners should help us prepare for and compete on a tough course at Waukon on Sept. 22,” assistant coach Martha Bauder said.

As for the junior high results, the girls sent only Layla Embretson, who finished 36th out of 42 runners, with a 18:32.

The junior high boys were the stars of the meet for Central. The entire team, consisting of medalists Gavin Holst, Caden Fette and Collin Jaster, as well as hard running Braxton Bormann, Bryce Heller and Michael White, ran season best times.

And not only did Holst win a medal and run a season best time, he was also the individual champion, with a first-place finish.

For their part, Fette finished sixth and Jaster was close behind in eighth. The strong running led Central to the overall team victory as well, winning with a score of 27.

“Layla Embretson was our only girl competing this time, so there was no team score for girls. On the boys, we won the team competition due to Gavin Holst finishing as the individual champion along with all his teammates running hard and recording season best finishes. The boys team has been first or second in all their meets so far this season. Our next meet at Waukon will be a great challenge for them to see how they can finish against some traditionally excellent competition,” Bauder said.
