The #2 Prairie du Chien Blackhawks kicked off Level 1 of the WIAA Division 5 playoffs at home versus the #7 New Glarus-Monticello Knights on Friday night.

The defenses shined in the first 3 quarters, as the teams combined for only 3 total touchdowns in that span.

In the 4th quarter, the Hawks’ defense picked up right where it left off, and the offense exploded for 3 touchdowns to put the game away, as the Hawks (9-1) defeated the Knights (5-5) 35-14 to advance to Level 2 next Friday.

After a couple big plays to open the game, the Knights looked to be in control before a swing pass was fumbled by the receiver. Isaac Avery scooped up the loose ball and took it into New Glarus territory before being taken down. The Hawks drove down to the 1-yard line on 6 plays, but ultimately weren’t able to get the ball into the end zone, as a New Glarus defender jumped in front of and intercepted a pass on 4th-and-goal from the 3.

Two plays later, the Knights got on the board after a 74-yard swing pass from QB Mason to Darris Schuett. The extra point was good, giving New Glarus-Monticello a 7-0 lead with 4:48 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Hawks answered with an 8-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 7-yard TD run from QB Dylan Coleman. The PAT was no good, but the Blackhawks had shrunk the deficit to 7-6 to open the 2nd quarter. After forcing a 3-and-out, the Hawks looked to be well on their way to another score, but the Knights’ defense stiffened at the goal line, stuffing the 4th-and-goal attempt from the 2-yard line to take over on downs. After three consecutive 3-and-outs between the teams, the Hawks took over on their own 33-yard line with 2:06 to go in the opening half.

After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Knights moved the ball out near midfield, the Hawks pieced together small gains to make it back to the red zone for the fourth time in the game. With 30 seconds to go, and the Blackhawks facing a 3rd-and-3 from the 6-yard line, Coleman found Ben Riter in the end zone to give the Hawks the lead. The 2-point attempt was no good, but Prairie had grabbed a 12-7 lead heading into halftime.

The PdC offense was clicking in the 3rd quarter, as the Hawks’ opening possession went 8 plays for 53 yards before the Knights were able to come up with their 2nd interception of the game. Unfazed, the Hawks’ defense continued to do its job, forcing a punt from midfield. Fueled by the run game, the Blackhawks answered with an 11-play drive that went 88 yards, and Tyler Hannah smashed into the end zone from 2 yards out for his first score of the game. Hannah ran in the 2-point try successfully, increasing the lead to 20-7 as the 4th quarter got underway.

On the opening play of New Glarus’ ensuing drive, Martinson hit Schuett once again, and this time Schuett ran 57 yards to the end zone to trim the PdC lead to 20-14 after the PAT.

The Hawks, seemingly unbothered by the minor setback, answered with a 70-yard drive that ended in a TD from Traeton Saint. Hannah successfully converted the 2-point try once again, extending the lead to 28-14 with 7 minutes remaining in the game. Prairie du Chien kept their foot on the gas, as Traeton Saint fell on the Hawks’ onside kick. Ten plays later, the Blackhawks delivered the “dagger,” with Coleman ending a 10-play drive with a 23-yard touchdown run.

After an unsuccessful drive from the Knights, Coleman took the Hawks to the line in victory formation to send the Blackhawks on to Level 2 after a 35-14 comeback victory over New Glarus/Monticello.

Tyler Hannah led the rushers with 18 carries for 116 yards and 1 TD. Traeton Saint added 103 yards and 1 touchdown, and Dylan Coleman ran for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Coleman was 16-for-21 in the air for 221 yards, 1 TD, and 2 Int. Ben Riter led the receivers with 9 receptions for 122 yards, and Mason Kramer hauled in 5 passes for 74 yards. The defense was led by Tyler Hannah, who had 5 tackles on the night. Max Amundson and Colten Wall contributed 4 tackles apiece.

The Blackhawks will host the #6 Arcadia Raiders (6-4) on Friday night in Level 2 of the WIAA Division 5 Playoffs. Game time is 7 p.m.
