An event to raise funds for a new K-9 unit for the Prairie du Chien Police Department drew an enthusiastic crowd Thursday evening outside of Jim’s Bar of Prairie du Chien.

Officer Casey Cox, who is part of a K-9 unit with “Rico,” said the new dog will come in 2021 from Working K9, a company in Toronto, Canada. The dog will be a Belgian Malinois. The breed looks similar to a German Shepherd but is smaller.

Thursday’s event had lots of great food, including two flavors of brats, ribs and many other tasty treats donated by Mississippi Meats. There was a dunk tank, a raffle featuring lots of excellent prizes, and music supplied by Nate and Nick Gilberts’ DJ service.

Another crowd pleaser was the Green Bay Packers versus Chicago Bears football game shown on a projector screen outside of Jim’s Bar. Of course, the Packers won the 199th meeting between the old rivals, 10-3.

The event was sponsored by Jim’s Bar, Mississippi Meats, True Value Hardware Store, Althof’s Television Center, 3M, and Nate and Nick Gilberts’ DJ service.

Cox said all proceeds will go toward the implementation of a second K-9 unit and to help with the existing K-9 unit.
