L’Dean Donald Henkes, 76, of Monona, died on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis. L’Dean was born on June 13, 1943, in Monona, to Donald and Iva (Topel) Henkes. He was baptized on Aug. 22, 1943, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, and graduated from MFL High School, also in Monona. Following high school, L’Dean started farming and continued to be active in the Henkes family farming operation until his passing. 

L’Dean was united in marriage to Arleta Henning on Sept. 17, 1963, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. They farmed together and taught their three sons and their families how to work as a team. He loved farming and also fishing with his family. L’Dean served as president of the local co-op board, Swiss Valley Director, Crows-Channel seed corn dealer and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Arleta Henkes, Monona; his son Daryl Henkes and his wife Beth and their family, Zachary and Emily, Brady and Clayton; his son Dustin Henkes and his fiancé, Michele and their children, Owen, Ashlyn and Isla Henkes and Briana, Michael and Brinan Berger; his brother, James (Mary Lou) Henkes; nieces and nephews and many friends.

L’Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Iva Henkes; his son and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Jody Henkes;  two grandsons, Austin and Aren Henkes; and a granddaughter, Faith Henkes.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona. There will also be a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Wednesday.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, with Rev. Erika Kielstrup as the officiant.

Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona.
