Prairie baseball on to sectional play
The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks defeated third-seeded Fennimore 2-1 to claim the WIAA Regional championship on Wednesday in Prairie du Chien in high school baseball action. The victory advances the Blackhawks to the WIAA Sectional games to be played in Brodhead on Tuesday, June 4.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Blackhawks scored their first run to tie the game. Ryan McGrath started the inning with a single followed by a single by Dylan Coleman. Pinch runner Josh Dyer scored from third on a ground ball by Mark Welter.
The winning run was scored in the bottom of the fourth inning after Hunter Davis doubled, was sacrificed to third by yet another perfect bunt by Ryan McGrath and driven in with a sacrifice fly from Clayton DuCharme.
Jacob Joy started the game for the Blackhawks. Joy pitched 3.2 innings, only giving up 2 hits and striking out 4. Coleman got the win by only allowing 1 hit while striking out 5 in 3.1 innings of relief.
Top-seeded Prairie du Chien is now 18-2 on the season and advances to the next round of the WIAA Tournament against top-seeded Viroqua on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Brodhead.
