Lew James Goranson, 86, of Greeley, died at the Regional Medical Center on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019.

Visitation was Monday, Feb. 18, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Edgewood and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 19, at United Methodist Church, Greeley.

Burial was at Grant View Cemetery, Greeley.

Lew was born on Sept. 3, 1932, at home on the farm in rural Greeley, the son of Frank and Florence (Parker) Goranson. Lew attended Greeley School where he was active in baseball and basketball and graduated in 1951. After school he farmed with his dad.

Lew served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War from Jan. 13, 1954, until Jan. 12, 1956. He served with the Gyro Big Red One Unit in Germany.

On Feb. 5, 1956, Lew was united in marriage to Shirley Edmonds at the Manchester Methodist Church. They were blessed with three children. Together they lived on the family farm and were dairy farmers their whole lives. They were awarded the Dairy Farmer of the year award.

Lew was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He loved family and being a grandpa to everybody. He enjoyed polka music and playing cards. Lew was a lifelong faithful member of Greeley Methodist Church and a former member of Greeley Odd Fellows Lodge. Lew participated in the Honor Flight on April 25, 2017.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley Goranson of Greeley; three children, Terry (Barb) Goranson of Greeley, LuAnn (Tom) Bolsinger of Colesburg, and Danny (Kim) Goranson of Greeley; "special son" Joe (Ruth) Zirtzman of Mooreland, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his four sisters-in-law, Doris Lei of Manchester, Norma (Jerry) George of New Mexico, Joan Edmonds of Coggon, and Joyce Edmonds of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

Lew was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Robert Goranson; and five sisters, Mabel Schnurstein, Betty Haynes, Mary Goranson, and two in infancy.
