Garage destroyed but house saved in Seneca fire

A garage was destroyed but the house which was only a few feet away was saved by firefighters battling a blaze on a frigid Tuesday night, Jan. 29, one of the coldest nights of the year so far. 

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department reports that a garage owned by Sara and Matt Wall on Highway 27 about three miles south of Seneca started on fire due to working on equipment in the garage when fumes ignited.

Responding to the scene were the Seneca, Eastman and Gays Mills fire departments, along with Tri-State Regional EMS, Alliant Energy, Seneca First Responders and the sheriff’s department.

The fire began at about 7 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene until 10 p.m. The severe cold froze some fire hoses and gelled up the diesel fuel of some trucks. Highway 27 was shut down for approximately three hours.

The house sustained damage to some siding but the family stayed there for the night. There were no injuries.
