Mary Dettman
Mary Dettman, 80, of St. Olaf, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader.
Visitation was Wednesday at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elkader and before services at the church.
Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 3, at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, conducted by Rev. Marshall Hahn.
Interment was at National Cemetery.
Mary was born March 11, 1938, in Guttenberg. She was the daughter of Ervin “Jack” and Agnes (Burr) Vorwald. Mary graduated from Garnavillo High School with the class of 1956. After high school she worked at Jensen Speaker in Guttenberg. She then married Clark Raymond Curran. Tragically, Clark died in an accident in June of 1965. On July 6, 1968, Mary married Dale Dettman at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. Mary and Dale farmed together near St. Olaf. She loved spending time with grandchildren, was an excellent seamstress and cook and enjoyed fishing.
She is survived by her husband Dale of St. Olaf; four children, Geraldine (Gary) of St. Olaf, Raymond (Rhonda) Curran of St. Olaf, Donald (Sandy) Curran of Hopkinton, Patrick (Poppy Zapht) Curran of Hesper; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd (Pat) Vorwald of Holy Cross and one sister, Karla (Harlan) Dettman McGregor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Clark; a son Richard; two sisters, Janice Elsbury, Joyce Vorwald Dolan and one brother, Harold Vorwald.
