Tyler Smock (top) placed 10th at the Bi-State Classic.

The 37th Annual Bi-State Classic, hosted by Holmen High School, was held on Dec. 28-29 at the La Crosse Center. This year, there were 68 teams competing, grouped together no matter the school size, in the ever tough tournament representing both Wisconsin and Minnesota high schools.

A few quick tidbits about just how stacked this tournament is: 86 wrestlers were in their state tournaments last year, 38 wrestlers were state medalists, five wrestlers were state champions, 180 wrestlers are ranked in their respective states.

Prairie du Chien was led by senior Tyler Smock, who placed 10th. In round one, Smock would waste little time, pinning his La Crosse Aquinas opponent in 0:42 seconds. In round two, Smock would repeat his first period fall, this time in 0:34 seconds against a La Crescent Hokah opponent. In round 3, Smock would pin his Pulaski opponent in 2:20 seconds to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Smock would be pinned in 3:24 by a Luxembourg-Casco opponent. This moved him to the consolation bracket, where he would lose by decision 7-3 to a Monroe opponent. Next, Smock would win by fall in 2:13 over an East View opponent to put himself in the ninth-place match, where he would lose by fall in 2:33 to his Wausau West opponent.

Also representing PdC at Bi-State were: Nick Mara (106#) 0-2, Chase Fisher (120#) 3-2, Chase Watson (126#) 1-2, Keenan Holley (132#) 2-2, Traeton Saint (145#) 2-2, Bradyn Saint (152#) 3-2, Isaac Avery (160#) 2-2, Zach Swiggum (182#) 1-2, Grant Martin (195#) 2-2, and Jerrod Osterkamp (285#) 3-2.

Also, new this year, was a women’s wrestling showcase. Maya Trautsch went 2-0 and Sheyenne Ronnfeldt went 1-1.

Next up for the Hawks is an SWC dual with Richland Center on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. in the PdC gymnasium. On Saturday, Jan. 5, the grapplers travel to the Merrill Scramble.
