Daniel Joseph Scheckel, 50, beloved second son of Larry and Ann Scheckel, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Gundersen Hospital, from complications of pneumonia.

Dan was born to Lawrence “Larry” and Ann (Martin) Scheckel on May 2, 1968, at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, their second of three sons.

Dan and his brother, Patrick, had both a lawn mowing service and a paper route for many years. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1983, and from Tomah High School in the class of 1987.

Dan took great pleasure from simple things. He so enjoyed working with the REM Maintenance Crew in LaFarge. He loved going to McDonald’s and coming home for family dinners, and he loved Christmas. He always thanked us for coming to see him. He was a Wisconsin Badgers fan and loved wearing their colors. He had a great sense of humor. We were so blessed to have Dan in our life. He made us appreciate the beauty of ordinary things and the blessing of family. He also taught us the capacity of the heart for love is infinite.

We would like to thank his doctors, nurses, the respiratory therapists, and all the other health care professionals at Gundersen Health System for all of the compassionate care they gave Dan. We would like to thank Father Dhein for coming to the hospital and administering his last rites. We would also like to thank all the very special caregivers in his group homes over the years. We especially wish to express our deep gratitude to Carrie Horstman and Sarah Solomon, of Inclusa, for their extraordinary efforts and dedication to ensuring that Dan had the best life possible, despite his many challenges. In addition, we extend a special thank you to Shawn Fish, who worked with him at his group home in LaFarge for 12 years. She appreciated Dan’s unique personality, and because of her patience, humor, grace, and compassion, she brought him so much joy.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Ann of Tomah, and his brother, Patrick (Dana) Scheckel of Madison. He is further survived by his nephew, Teddy, and his niece, Marit Scheckel of Madison, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Paul, on Jan. 24, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Alvin and Martha (Lewig) Scheckel of Seneca; and his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Loretta (Foley) Martin of Eastman.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Tomah. A visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of the Apostles School Guardian Angel Fund or Chasing Daylight Animal Shelter of Tomah. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is in charge of arrangements.
