An area man was arrested Oct. 1, on narcotics-related charges, following a high-speed chase and crash, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At about 1:30 a.m., last Monday, a Prairie du Chien police officer observed a vehicle driving east on West Blackhawk Avenue, with an equipment violation. When the officer turned around in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Christopher Easterling, 29, of Mount Hope, increased his speed. The vehicle turned south into an alleyway, then west on East Wisconsin Street, and a vehicle pursuit began. Speeds reached around 100 mph near the Highway 18 bridge, and the vehicle began passing other vehicles.

The pursuit entered Clayton County, Iowa, where authorities were notified. As the pursuit reached Highway 18 near the Mar-Mac Police Department, Easterling lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a nearby pond. He then exited and fled on foot. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit assisted in the pursuit and quickly deployed K-9 Breck. Easterling hid in a swamp and then, after hearing barking from K-9 Breck, gave himself up to authorities.

Easterling displayed indicators of narcotics impairment and told the officers he ingested methamphetamine prior to the pursuit, according to the police department.

He was transported to Crossing Rivers Health for minor injuries sustained from the crash and due to his level of narcotics impairment. Prairie du Chien officers arrested Easterling after he was medically cleared and took him to the Crawford County Jail. He faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a restricted controlled substance-second offense, felony eluding an officer and misdemeanor bail jumping. At the time of the incident, Easterling was on bond through Crawford County for prior narcotics charges.

Assisting authorities were Mar-Mac EMS, Mar-Mac Fire and Bud’s Towing and Repair.
