Contractors for the Marquette Road project in Prairie du Chien are operating on a tight schedule, as most construction work goes. In order for the main contractor, Gerke Excavating, to keep up with the project, the company requested and the city council granted a variance of the municipal code for loud and unnecessary noise.

The code prohibits anyone, except for city employees, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., from performing construction work or operating any loud machinery, according to Interim City Administrator Chad Abram. However, upon application to the council, the code can be waived for good cause for any period of time.

The council approved Gerke’s request to conduct 24-hour crushing at the crushing site behind the old FS plant along the Highway 18 Bypass. Abram said, this is so the contractor and its sub-contractors can keep on schedule with the project, slated for completion by Nov. 12.

Council seat

The fifth aldermanic district has a vacancy on the council created by the departure of Heather Olson, who resigned after the Sept. 18 council meeting due to family relocation. Olson was appointed by the council in 2017, to fill a vacant seat. She then ran for re-election in the spring of 2018. Her term does not expire until 2020. The council approved a new alderperson Tuesday night. Allie (Clausen) Thornton will fulfill the rest of Olson’s term.

Bench/water fountain

The city was approached recently by Rotary Club members, who, in the interest of improving the community, wish to fund and work with the city to install a decorative garbage container and/or water fountain by the existing bench at the corner of Campion and 22nd streets. Abram pointed out that the bike/walk path along 22nd Street is a heavily-used pedestrian avenue.

The council approved the Rotary Club’s request for the garbage can. The city’s involvement with this will include emptying the trash when necessary. However, the fountain idea was put off at this time due to cost, which would include connecting to city water lines, Mayor Dave Hemmer said.
