Dorothy Ann Birrenbach, 80, of Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

Dorothy was born on Jan. 11, 1938, in Le Sueur, Minn., the daughter of Floyd and Anna (Schaefer) Schwarz.  Dorothy was united in marriage with John Kenneth “Ken” Birrenbach on Feb. 28, 1956. She was an avid bridge player, golfer and bowler. Dorothy was a member of the Memorial Hospital board. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Church and of the 20th century Study Club. (Book Club) She participated in volunteers in Missions for over fifteen years.

She loved square dancing with her husband and camping with her family. Even though Dorothy had a serious hatred of the water, she insisted that her children learn to swim. She was very proud of the fact that she spent eight years in the second grade—as a teacher’s aide. She loved books, walks, and birds. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her contagious smile and lilting laughter will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Ken; children, Linda (Peter) Staloch, of Cottage Grove, Minn., Julie (Ben) Baker, of West Salem, Tim (Brenda) Birrenbach, of Clinton Corners, N.Y.; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Don (Betty) Schwarz, of Le Sueur, Minn., Dean (Bev) Schwarz, of Zumbrota, Minn., Ron (Beth) Schwarz, of Apple Valley, Minn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bob (Sandy) Schwarz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Prairie du Chien UMC. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at United Methodist Church, Prairie du Chien, with Rev. Barb Cook and Rev. Lynn Schreck as the officiants. Private family burial followed. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Prairie du Chien, is helping the family with arrangements.
