McGregor’s new mayor is Lyle Troester. The city council appointed Troester at its July 18 meeting, selecting him from a pool of three candidates that also included Deb Scott and Joey Collins.

The decision was not unanimous, with Jason Echard casting the lone dissenting vote among “yes” votes from Rogeta Halvorson, Charlie Carroll, Janet Hallberg and Joe Muehlbauer.

Troester replaces Harold Brooks, who resigned from the position in June.

Muehlbauer, serving as mayor pro-tem, said the council opted to appoint a new mayor in order to save the cost of a special election and to promote the continuity of city government. If any residents are unhappy with the decision, they have 14 days from the date of the appointment to petition for a special election. A minimum of 18 signatures would be required.

Troester grew up in the McGregor area, moved away, then returned in 1994. He’s worked as the regional sales manager for seed companies and also served on the dock commission and other community groups.

He said he threw his name in for mayoral consideration after fellow residents encouraged him to do so.

Plus, Troester said, “I love McGregor. I like to promote the area and help instill pride in the community.”

As mayor, Troester said he will work to spread that community pride.

“We are all blessed to live here,” he commented. “We should all work together. We’re all responsible for taking care of the community and promoting it and sharing it.”
