164th Clayton County Fair has fun for the whole family Aug. 1-6

From live entertainment and inflatable activities to livestock showing and good food, the 164th annual Clayton County Fair, held Aug. 1-6 in National, will offer fun for the whole family.

Clayton County 4-H and FFA members have entered 3,219 exhibits for the county fair competition, according to Tammy Muller, Clayton County 4-H and Youth Program Coordinator. Entries are up 245 exhibits. The market beef, breeding beef, bucket bottle calves, dairy, sheep, horses, meat goats, dairy goats, dogs, rabbits, pets, Clover Kids and communications divisions have all seen an increase, Muller noted.

The 4-H exhibit hall, featuring projects ranging from art to engineering, will be open to viewers Wednesday, Aug. 1, beginning at 4 p.m., then Thursday through Sunday starting at noon.

Animal judging will begin on Tuesday, July 31, with the pet show. The horse show will follow on Wednesday, then Thursday will feature rabbits and dogs. The dairy and meat goats, sheep, dairy cattle and market beef shows will take place on Friday. Saturday includes the poultry, swine, breeding beef and bucket bottle calf shows

The fair’s popular kiddie calf shows will be held in the large arena on Sunday, with the dairy show beginning at noon and the beef show immediately following. The little piglet show, now in its third year, will begin after the beef kiddie calf show, in the small arena.

Fair activities will get in full swing Wednesday, Aug. 1, with the flag-raising ceremony and crowning of the 2018 fair queen at 6:30 p.m. The 4-H Style Show and Share the Fun Show will follow at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Aug. 2, the evening’s entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the skid loader rodeo, which will test an individual’s skills as he/she operates through an obstacle.

At 7:30 p.m., Moe Bandy, one of America’s all-time leading classic country music performers, will take the grandstand stage. He has had several hit songs, including “I Cheated Me Right Out of You” and “Hank Williams, You Wrote My Life.”

Friday, Aug. 3, at 8 p.m., Grammy-award-winning country starlet Pam Tillis will entertain fair-goers on the grandstand stage.

Saturday’s activities include a kiddie tractor pull at 1 p.m. The demolition derby will also get underway at that time. At 5 p.m., head to the grandstands to watch the fifth annual stick horse rodeo, followed by the Clayton County Bull Bash at 7 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., the fair will have movie night.

On Sunday, Aug. 5, the truck and tractor pull kicks off at 11 a.m. Kids can take part in the Youth Olympics, held in the large arena, at 2:30 p.m. The band McEwyn, whose sound has been described as nineties country woven between the tunes of modern tailgate jam, will rock the grandstand stage starting at 5 p.m.

The fair will wrap up Monday, Aug. 6, with the livestock auction, which begins at 9 a.m.

Kids can enjoy nine different inflatables for free from 4 to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, then from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Mechanical bull rides and concessions will be available during that time for a fee.

The commercial exhibit hall will be open daily at noon, beginning on Thursday, Aug. 2.

While you’re at the fair, don’t forget to stop by the newly-completed hog and sheep facility. The Clayton County Ag Society will also be selling raffle tickets for a John Deere Gator. Funds raised will support normal operating expenses of the fair.
