A late spring in the Upper Midwest delayed the end-of-winter thaw in the watershed of the Mississippi River, and will bring a minor crest at Guttenberg this week.
On Monday, the National Weather Service in LaCrosse, Wis., predicted a crest of 15.3 feet at Guttenberg on May 3-4, followed by a very slow drop in river levels.
In Guttenberg, major flood stage is 21 feet; moderate flood stage is 18 feet, minor stage is 15 feet, and "action" stage is 12 feet.
The historic flood of 1965 had a crest here of 23.65 feet on April 24.
